IELTS WRITING
1. Work from home
Research shows that business meetings, discussions and training are happening
online nowadays. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
It is true that discussion and interaction among employees in many companies are
taking place online with increasing regularity. While online communication certainly
has some drawbacks, I believe that the benefits of this practice are more significant.
On the one hand, conducting meetings and discussions on the Internet may present a
range of difficulties. First, switching to this type of meetings may challenging for
people who are not familiar with new technologies such as web conferencing. For
example, most elderly employees at a company would struggle with Zoom calls
because they have never used this application before. It is obvious that having them
figure out how video calls work can be time-consuming and frustrating. Second, there
are many distractions when people participate in online meetings. For example, when
people do video calls, it is not uncommon for the microphone to stop working at
times, or for participants to be disconnected from the call due to Internet connectivity
issues. These technical failures can seriously affect the productivity of the people in
the meeting, and in these cases usually conventional meetings would have been better.

On the other hand, I am convinced that the numerous benefits of virtual interaction in
companies far outweigh the drawbacks mentioned above. By communicating and
holding meetings virtually. companies can cut considerable costs. They can save a lot
of money on expenses for business trips. for example, simply by conducting
discussions or training sessions via conference calls. Not having to spend on these
expenses is critical to a company's profitability. Another huge advantage of online
business communication is that it enables employees to work from home. As it is
proving very difficult for companies to retain staff nowadays, being able to offer
flexible working arrangements like this is becoming more important than ever. It
could be said that without online tools like emails and video calls, employers cannot
give their staff this flexibility, which could result in people eaving the company or
other serious human resource problems.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the advantages of online meetings and
discussions in a company are greater than the disadvantages, and thus they should be
encouraged.

Society is based on rules and laws. It could not function if individuals were free to do
whatever they wanted to do. To what extent do you agree with this statement?
Law and order have been embedded into all societies and communities since the
dawn of civilization. Some argue that the world will be thrown into disarray in the
absence of the law. I completely agree with this thinking, for the reasons provided
below.
First of all, without the law to suppress mankind's baser nature, society will be in
ruins. Humans are inherently selfish and greedy, and these traits could incite jealousy
and spark violent conflicts. They could also prompt us to pursue economic growth
with reckless abandon, causing irreparable damage to the planet like we have done
in the past century. In other words, without a set of rules to ensure wholesome
behaviors, human society will head down a path of self-destruction - a scenario that
has thus far been averted by the criminal justice system and the environmental accords
that we have in place.
Second, a society without the strictures imposed by legislation will allow huge
disparities and injustices to exist. Power would ultimately rest with the individuals and
corporations who possess the most resources, leaving ordinary citizens vulnerable and
powerless. Imagine the world's oil reserve being owned by a handful of major oil
tycoons who are free to dictate how much a barrel costs - this commodity would
simply become extortionate for the masses. This would perpetuate the wealthy's
prosperity and the poor's austerity, and such a society is hardly desirable.
In conclusion, I agree with the view that a society devoid of laws and regulations is a
dysfunctional one as it would invariably result in destruction and inequality.

All towns and cities need to have large outdoor public spaces such as parks or
squares. Do you agree or disagree?
Urban planning undoubtedly has a considerable bearing on the wellbeing of city
dwellers. Because of this, public opinion remains divided over how to effectively
design cities and towns in a bid to boost citizens' welfare. It is believed that open
green places such as parks and squares should always be present in urban areas and
towns. This essay would agree with this thinking as such vast spaces are highly
beneficial to both physical and health of the masses.
Constructing many outdoor recreational amenities in towns or cities irrefutably has a
positive impact on citizens' health. Obviously, sedentary lifestyles have long been
established as the chief culprit of the increasing number of health problems such as
obesity or diabetes. In other words, individuals are becoming less physically active;
for example: working adults typically sit behind a desk and children tend to hunch
over their phones for an enormous amount of time daily, which can be highly
detrimental to their health. These low levels of physical activities can be attributed to
a dearth of large outdoor spaces where people can play sports or do exercises. Thus,
building more vast green spots is of the essence for every city and town as these
places could provide muchneeded space for people to work out and maintain good
levels of fitness.
Health aside, wide public spaces can also improve the psychological wellbeing of the
public. Communal places such as parks or squares are generally deemed the sites
where people can relax after grueling working hours as well as build local
communities through social conversations and interactions. The absence of such
places can take a heavy toll on city dwellers' mental well-being since they may spend
more time staying at home or the workplace. Hanoi perfectly epitomizes this situation.
Due to a lack of green vast areas, people have fewer chances to go out and socialize
with others and in most cases, they are forced to be either in their apartments or
offices during the day, which tends to leave them mentally drained. This is a testament
to how building large outdoor areas is of fundamental importance for the mental
health of the masses in urban areas.
In conclusion, the notion that every town or city needs to have large green spaces is
valid as these places could go a long way towards enhancing both physical and mental
welfare of the general public.

It is better for college students to live in schools than live at home with their parents.
Do you agree or disagree?
As young adults enter college, they are presented with the choice of boarding at
school or living with their parents. This essay is going to argue that student
accommodation is the optimal choice for undergraduates. This point will be illustrated
by looking at how living at home is simply unfeasible for most students, and the
benefits accruing from staying in a dormitory. Today, very few students attend a local
college or university, thus the idea of them staying at home during school term is
implausible. This is particularly valid in developing nations, where most colleges are
concentrated in urban centers. Daily commutes would be difficult for those who live
in rural areas or even suburban residents. To these students, oncampus housing is
obviously the more sensible option. For example, in Vietnam, rural citizens tend to
move to the city for college and share a dorm room instead of commuting from their
residences. The choice of living at school is reinforced by the fact that it fosters
personal growth in ways not otherwise possible with living at home. For instance,
when boarding at a dormitory, students with discrepant preferences would learn to
make compromises. This is not necessary if they live with their parents who are
generally more accommodating. In addition, living away from home also teaches
students to be more independent, because they must manage their personal finances as
well as taking care of their own nutritional needs. In fact, Americans who lived in
fraternity houses during college have reported that they became more self-reliant as a
result of having to budget and cook for themselves. In conclusion, I strongly believe
that it makes more sense for college students to live on campus, for the reasons
provided above.

Many people believe that the extinction of animals is a natural phenomenon, and it is
pointless to prevent this from happening. Personally, I strongly disagree with these
points of view and will explain the reasons in the essay below.
To begin with, human activities are accelerating the process of animal extinction.
While many species such as dinosaurs and mammoths went extinct because of
environmental factors like climate change millions of years ago, a great number of
animal species today are facing extinction due to habitat loss or hunting activities.
People are causing the destruction of animals’ habitats by cutting down trees to make
way for houses and factories. And many wild animal species like rhinos or zebras
are on the brink of extinction since they are hunted massively for their body parts
to serve the demands for fashion or medicines.
In addition, preventing animals from extinction is of great importance. Firstly, this
would help maintain a healthy ecological balance. Given that the ecosystem relies on
the interrelationship of different living organisms, the disappearance of one group
could cause considerable disruption for others. For example, the loss of a prey species
in the food chain could impact the populations of its predators. Moreover, saving
wildlife could prevent the potential economic loss. Regarding agricultural and farming
activities, pollination plays a significant role in the growth of crops. Therefore, should
pollinators like bees be reduced in numbers, it would cost humans a huge amount of
money spent on manpower or technologies to find an alternative to natural
pollination.
In conclusion, I believe that people are the main driver of animal extinction, and it is
unreasonable to assume that there is no point in preventing animals from going extinct
since preserving wildlife maintains the balance of the ecosystem as well as avoiding
economic damage.

6. Topic Corporate Salary
Nowadays, the growing disparity between the salaries of high-level executives and the
average employees has become a major concern among policy-makers. While some
argue that giving high compensation to directors and managers can bring about many
perks, I am still of the opinion that it is only beneficial to a certain extent.
On one side of the argument, it is undeniable that enormous executive salaries play a
crucial part in the corporate world. The first reason is that such incomes are on par
with the talents of directors. The amount of time, effort and intellect involved in
operating a large corporation is simply astronomical, which makes management a
physically and mentally taxing occupation. Thus, this position needs a good pay rate
to keep it occupied. Secondly, due to the immense importance of competent
executives, companies must secure the best people to help them develop. Regardless,
only a handful of people have the abilities and qualifications to handle this job, so
corporations need to create the best offers with the highest benefits to compete for
them.
On the other hand, companies still have to pay other employees a worthwhile salary.
Firstly, besides the sole purpose of making profits, corporations must care about social
equality and responsibility. The fact that giant conglomerates like Amazon or Apple
can spend millions of dollars on their directors, while many of their employees only
have a bare minimum salary, is an injustice that needs to be addressed right away.
Furthermore, this helps create a comfortable and fulfilling workplace that encourages
employees to devote themselves to their work. A good income frees workers from
their daily struggles to make ends meet, which means they will have more time to
improve their performance and be more satisfied with the working environment.
All in all, it can be seen that providing a high executive salary does have its benefits.
Still, there are also many arguments stacked against it. Thus, corporations must strike
a balance between salary levels to create a better workplace for all.

Success has always been of great interest to the public, and people have contradicting
opinions regarding criteria to measure one’s success. Personally, I think both money
and social contributions can be good indicators of success.
On the one hand, those with immense fortunes are lauded as successful since wealth is
often the result of hard work and talent. As an illustration, Elon Musk, one of the most
well-known billionaires globally, works for sixteen hours per day. With his
inventiveness, he is the brain behind Tesla’s brilliant electric car models. The same
principle of success applies in virtually every case. Employees with the highest
incomes in an enterprise are often the most dedicated and productive ones. Thus, it is
reasonable to argue that money signifies success.
On the other hand, many are convinced that success should be measured by one’s
contributions to society, and in this regard, scientists and teachers are most successful.
Thanks to scientific advances in farming, medicine, communication and other aspects
of life, the world is now a much better place than it used to be, where people can lead
a longer, healthier and happier life with sufficient food, medical care and convenience.
Similarly, by providing quality education for students, teachers play a significant role
in the development of children in particular and the whole society in general.
It is also important to note that affluence and positive social impacts are not
necessarily two separate factors. In fact, rich people are often the most generous
donors for good causes worldwide. Bill Gates, who founded one of the largest
charitable organizations in the world, sets a good example for the case. It also works
the other way round as people’s earnings are mostly proportional to the value of their
contributions. In the case of Elon Musk, he himself is a scientist before being a
businessman. It is his world-changing inventions that generate billions of dollars every
year for Musk.
In conclusion, I believe that success can be assessed by either wealth or social
contributions or both. After all, the definition of success varies greatly, and to me, as
long as one achieves what they aim for, they are successful.
