Decoding Express Entry

Introduced in January 2015,
Express Entry serves as Canada’s
application management system
to facilitate the selection of
candidates seeking permanent
residency in Canada through
specific economic immigration
programs.

Express Entry was developed with

three primary objectives: flexibility
in selection and application
management, responsiveness to
the labor market and regional
needs, and efficiency in
application processing. Despite
some adjustments to the system
during its initial year and concerns
expressed by stakeholders, Express
Entry has successfully met its
intended goals.

Upon submission of an online profile by an interested candidate, the

federal government assesses their eligibility for a program managed by
Express Entry. Eligible candidates are accepted into the Express Entry pool
and ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The
government employs this points-based system to evaluate and rank
candidates within the Express Entry pool, taking into account factors such
as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and other
considerations.
Approximately every two weeks, the Canadian government selects the
highest-scoring candidates from the Express Entry pool and extends
them an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Additionally,
Canada has specific categories where eligible candidates may receive
ITAs through targeted draws.

How to Apply for Express Entry?
In order to enter the express entry pool, individuals must meet the
requirements of at least one of the following immigration programs:
1) Canadian Experience Class,
2) Federal Skilled Worker Program, or
3) Federal Skilled Trades Program.

utilize to determine if you qualify to apply for the express entry system

generate an express entry profile by providing your personal information

To complete your profile, you will need to have certain documents
and the job title and code from the National Occupational
Classification (NOC) ready.

Creating this profile is free of charge, and it remains active only for
one year from the date of creation. However, you can resubmit your
profile after its expiration.

After submitting your profile, you will receive a score that determines
your position in the pool through the Comprehensive Ranking System.

While you are part of the pool, it is crucial to regularly update your
profile to reflect any changes in your circumstances, such as
language proficiency, education, or family members.

How Can I Get Invited for PR
Through the Express Entry
System?

The Canadian government conducts rounds of invitations, also referred

to as “draws,” in which it invites candidates with the highest scores to
immigrate to Canada. Throughout the year, there are three types of
rounds conducted by the Canadian government through the Express
Entry system:

1) General rounds of invitation,

2) Program-specific rounds of invitation, and
3) Category-based rounds of invitation.

The government determines the type of round, and the number of

candidates to be invited. It selects the candidates with the highest
rankings from the pool to receive an invitation to apply for permanent
residence.

How to Apply for Permanent
Residency If I Get an Invitation?
If the Canadian government invites you to apply for permanent
residency through the express entry system, you will have 60 days to
submit your application.

When filling out the form:

Make sure you submit all of the required documents.
All of your answers must be complete and true.
Make sure all the mandatory fields are completed, or you won’t be
able to submit your application.
You can save your information on the form and go back as often as
you need to.

Upon submission, you will be issued an “Acknowledgement of Receipt

(AOR)” as a confirmation that Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship
Canada (IRCC) has received your application for permanent residence
in Canada and has assigned it an application number. Subsequently,
your application will undergo a thorough review to ensure its
completeness and undergo verification procedures.
If your application is approved by the IRCC, you will receive an email
containing a “Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)” letter.
Additionally, if you are from a country that requires a visa, you will be
provided with a permanent resident visa.
