Have you ever heard of Josiah Alexander Sila or also known as Joey Alexander?
He is a child prodigy and an Indonesian Jazz pianist born in Denpasar, Bali on
June 25th, 2003. He became the first Indonesian musician to chart on Billboard
200 when he was only 12 years old. His parents were fans of jazz, and he learned
how to play the piano using a miniature electric keyboard.
When Herbie Hancock, an American musician and actor, was visiting Indonesia as
UNESCO goodwill ambassador, Joey played for him. Joey was eight years old at
that time, and he called the moment as “the day I decided to dedicate my
childhood to jazz.”
He won the Grand Prix at the 2013 aster-jam Fest. An all-ages jazz competition
in Odessa, Ukraine, which included 43 musicians from 17 nations at the age of
nine.
