In Memoriam: The Right Reverend Daniel William Herzog
(July 9, 1941 – August 4, 2023)
"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints."
(Psalm 116:15)
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It is with both sorrow and rejoicing that I share the news of Bishop Daniel
Herzog's passing today after an extended illness. He is now in the presence of the
Lord.
Bishop Dan was one of our retired bishops and was received into the
Anglican Diocese of the Living Word in April 2021. He was ordained to the
priesthood in 1971 and consecrated as a Coadjutor-Bishop in 1997. In 1998, he
began his term as the eighth Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Albany. He retired
in 2007 and later assisted his successor, the Right Reverend William Love,
overseeing parish revitalizations and serving as the Director of the Ministry of
Healing and Spiritual Formation at Christ the King Spiritual Life Center.
Continuing to serve with a servant's heart, his most recent ministry was a new
church plant in Utica, NY: Christ the King Anglican Mission.
Bishop Dan’s ministry to the diocese began long before 2021. His leadership
provided key direction to many men and women, both laity and clergy, particularly
in the New York region, as they transitioned from the Episcopal Church into the
Anglican Church in North America and the Anglican Diocese of the Living Word.
As his colleague and friend, Bishop David Bena, stated at our most recent synod,
“Bishop Dan was fighting battles for faithfulness before the rest of us even realized
there was a war.”
In this difficult time of loss and thanksgiving, I ask that you join us in prayer
for his dear widow, Carol, the diocese, Christ the King Anglican Mission, their
deacon in charge, the Rev. Howard Smith, and all those who loved Bishop Herzog
and mourn his death. I am deeply grateful to our Lord for empowering Bishop
Herzog’s ministry to the church for over five decades.
"O God of the spirits of all flesh, we praise and magnify your holy Name for all
your servants who have finished their course in your faith and fear, especially your
servant Daniel. We beseech you that, encouraged by their examples and
strengthened by their fellowship, we also may be found worthy to be partakers of
the inheritance of the saints in light; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen."
In Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Julian M. Dobbs
Anglican Diocese of the Living Word
