Apostrophes and Possessive Nouns
Apostrophes can be used as a contraction (the shortening of one or two words)
o e.g. there is becomes there’s; or because becomes ‘cause
Possessive Nouns show possession of an object by another object. It is easy to pick out a
possessive noun in a sentence: they are nouns, followed by an apostrophe and the letter S.
o e.g. Timothy’s football is well worn. (this is a possessive noun because it describes
the noun, football, as belonging to someone)
Plural Possessive Nouns require you to put the apostrophe after the S
o e.g. the villagers’ water.
