CHAPTER TWO: ASSIGNED TASKS/ACTIVITIES
2.0 INTRODUCTION
This chapter generally explains on activities that were performed, my placement in the
organization (PBZ LTD), working environment in the organization during my practical training,
challenges and problems faced in executing the tasks and how I solved them, my expectation
before going for training, things that I have learned as being part of an organization, the gape in
teaching between theory and practice, the employment prospects and the relevant of attachment.
2.1 PLACEMENT IN THE ORGANIZATION
I was conducted my practical training in the people’s bank of Zanzibar in customer service
department and operation department. For the first four weeks I was in operation department and
the rest four weeks in customer service department.
2.2 DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND TASKS PERFOMED
The activities that I have undertaken in these two departments include orientation, account
opening, checking customer balances and other particulars, preparing of bank statement, making
transfer of fund, filling, canning, printing and photocopying, checks clearance, writing checks
and filling other forms.
2.2.1 ORIENTATION
This was done during the two days of the first week I arrived. I had a chance to be introduced to
other staffs in all departments and I was given a code of conduct, explanation regarding working
environment, authorization of duties and branch structure of PBZ LTD.
2.2.2 OPENING OF ACCOUNT
This is one of the function I was undertaking during my field period. To open the account, the
customer is given a form to fill in and attach all requirement, after that the customer return a
form to customer services department to put them in the system. The PBZ LTD offers various
accounts such as saving account, fixed deposit account, joint account, current account, minor
account and so on.
2.2.3 CHECKING CUSTOMER BALANCES AND OTHER PARTICULARS
Another activity I was undertaken is to check customer’s balances and other details. This
happens when customers get to know what is the current balance and how much is able to
withdraw from their accounts before going to the teller. Also, the same system that is used to
display customers balance enables to see customer’s particulars such as signature, picture,
address and phone number of clients.
2.2.4 PREPARATION OF BANK STATEMENT
Bank statement is the printed record of balance in a bank account that have been paid into it and
withdrawn from it. It is issued to customer whenever they require it. The bank statement

3
includes bank name, depositors name, account name, date, beginning balance, amount paid into
account, amount withdrawal and ending balance of customer’s balance.
2.2.5 MAKING TRANSFER OF MONEY
This is the transfer of from one account to another one or more accounts. The PBZ LTD has
three systems of money transfer; these are internal transfer(IT), telegraphic transfer(TT) and
Tanzania Interbank settlement system (TISS).
[Link] INTERNAL TRANSFER
This is dealing with the transfer of fund from PBZ LTD account to other one or more PBZ LTD
account(s).
[Link] TELEGRAPHIC TRANSFER
This is concerning with the transfer of fund from PBZ LTD to other banks at abroad. This
system is very important to the foreigners and other traders who operate international trdae such
as exporters and importers.
[Link] TANZANIA INTERBANK SETTLEMENT SYSTEM
This system helps customer who can transfer funds from PBZ LTD to other banks within
Tanzania which can be NMB, CRDB, NBC and other banks.
2.2.6 FILLING, SCANNING, PRINTING AND PHOTOCOPYING
These were also daily works I was undertaking when it is needed to do so. The PBZ LTD is
dealing with many documents some of them include bank statement, check list, forms of money
transfer, letters from customers and other documents such as form of opening accounts.
2.2.7 CHECKS CLEARANCE
This is the payment of checks to specified person as per order of account holder. The checks
cleared can be bulk checks (multiple checks) or single checks. The PBZ LTD has two different
systems to clear each type of check. The check is said to be valid and can be cleared if all
material contained are correct for example date, amount in figures and in words, account
number, name of employee, the signatures and official stamp where necessary.
2.2.8 WRITING CHECKS AND FILLING OTHER FORMS
Another activity that I was undertaken is to direct customers to write valid checks and filling
other forms such as writing receipts and vouchers, filling form of opening account and money
transfer.
2.2.9 ADDING NEW FIXED DEPOSIT FOR A CERTAIN PERIOD
PBZ LTD also offers the time deposit which allows customers to invest their funds for a fixed
term and earn returns at a fixed interest rate. In this organization there is fixed deposit of 3
months, 6 months or a year with the conditions of no renewal, renew principal only or renew
principal and interest. Principal is the amount of fund from the customer that is deposited into
fixed account and interest is the amount of fund that the bank deposits into the account as

4
additional fund. When there is no renewal means that when it reaches at maturity (time ends) the
principal and the interest will be deposited to the account of the customer. When there is renewal
principal only means that when it reaches to maturity the fixed interest rate is deposited to the
customer account and its initial principal is put at fixed deposit although the customer should
visit the organization so as the bank can change interest rate. By not doing so the fixed deposit
will be renewed at its default rate which is 3%. When there is renew principal and interest rate it
means that when it reaches maturity no principal or interest that is deposited in the customer
account, the principal and interest will be all be deposited into fixed account. The formula for
total amount which the customer gets after maturity is given by the product of principal which is
the deposit, the interest rate and time for maturity.
2.2.10 ADDING NEW STANDING ORDER INSTRUCTIONS.
PBZ LTD performs the standing order which are regular payment of the fixed amount that is
paid on a specified date within a particular period of time. It allows the bank to take money
regularly from one account to pay to another account. A customer can use a standing order for
transferring money between customer accounts. The specific amount in which the bank will be
transferring the fund and time is set by the payer. The conditions are the payers’ choice to
specify the time or to continue until further notice. Also when the time ends the customer may
decide not to continue with the standing order and therefore the bank deletes the standing order.

2.3 WORKING ENVIRONMENT

PBZ LTD is normally working more as a family rather a team. In the first two weeks I was
undertaking activities under close supervision and thereafter I worked as a normal employee,
this freedom had given me a chance of being creativity and innovative in solving various
problems that might arise during the work hour. At a time, I was working with my co-workers
and other students who pursed their practical training in PBZ LTD. Generally, PBZ LTD
working environment is amazing and very cooperative for all employees and they are in trusting
on practical training students as they treat them as an employed worker.

5
CHAPTER THREE SKILLS AND COMPETENCES ACQUIRED
3.1 Introduction
During a practical training I had opportunity to capture number of new knowledge’s and skills
from the organization. These new things were learnt through computerized system and manually
respectively.
Ethics and Moral of Work.
I had the opportunity to study some important value such as competent, honesty, and integrity in
dealing with different duties and tasks, commitment and motivation to the achievement of goal
and objectives. I also learned how working relation influence performance of organization and
managed to know the behavior of various people and how to interact with them.
Communication skills.
Also I as a student I managed to learn how to communicate fairly with different kind of people
due to higher interaction I had with them.

3.3 Dealing with Customers Complain

3.5 Self-confidence
During my training I managed to acquire Self-confidence skills. The training made me to realize
more on how I should have confidence on what I am doing and how I can work independently
without a help when my supervisor was not around. I gained much confidence to speak to
different kind of people some are polite and others are not polite but the confidence I gained
made me to make sure I bring their satisfaction. Providing services to different types of
customers gave me the self-confidence skills. I was able to learn how the structure organization

6
of the institution is much important in facilitating and bring about daily duties and
responsibilities achievements. I learned how the branch manager of the organization works and
organizes everything so that every person must be responsible with his/her duties. I learned that
every organization operates under its own culture which identifies people working with. I
realized how teamwork is very important in any organization in bringing economic and business
growth.

CHAPTER FOUR; PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND SOLUTIONS.

7
4.1 INTRODUCTION
During my practical training most of the activities undertaken and general working environment
were good and interesting, although there are few problems and weakness in an organization
some of the problems I tried to solve them and some of them were beyond my power.
4.1.1 PROBLEM OF INCOMPLETE INSTRUCTION FROM SUPERVISOR
Sometime the supervisor was giving me short and quick instruction that is not absolutely open,
this gives me hard time to think more on what he instructed me but I think it was part of
measuring my ability and understanding.
4.1.2 PROBLEM OF INSUFFICIENT COMPUTER SETS
PBZ LTD has small number of computers that are fit and can operate properly as some of
computers had technical problem. Initially I was sharing
4.1.3 PROBLEM OF SMALL NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES
As compared to the activities done and number of customers served, PBZ LTD has shortage of
employees and this situation makes us to have less time for resting and sometime forced us to
work beyond working hours.

4.2 SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM

From the problem of incomplete instruction from supervisor, I tried to deal with it myself by
deep thinking on what I was instructed and when I failed to do what was intended to be done I
ask him to give me full instruction. This makes me to be more creative and confident on a work.
On the issues of shortage of computers and number of employees were not under my control,
although I gave an advice to my supervisor and branch manager on how to deal with them.
4.3 EXPECTATION BEFORE TRAINING
As it is normally known that, the people have an attendance of having imagination and a lot of
expectation before entering into new environment, this also happen to students before starting
his/her practical training to any organization at any department. Before going for practical

8
training there were things that I as a student expect to face in the organization, some were met
and some were not.
I as a student most of tasks assigned to me was relevant. The tasks like transfer of fund and
check clearance were most relevant as I expected before. Also I expected workers in this
organization to be very friendly to me and it was the same as I was expected.
Lastly but not definitely least to create new friends and familiarity to potential employees for the
future employment prospects and benefits in the future life was also among higher expectation
before I begin practical training. In fact, the workers of PBZ LTD are cooperative, work friendly
and as a family.

9
CHAPTER FIVE: CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS.
5.1 CONCLUSION
Accordingly, practical training is impressive and paramount to both students and to the
university as a whole. It enhances students to learn and understand many practical training
program which are not covered in classes and provide the ground for students to strengthen the
theoretical knowledge obtained in class into practical necessary for their career. Therefore,
student can integrate their theory into practice.
The training exposes the students to new challenges and enables the students to experience
different working environment before they actual employed upon completion of the studies.
The training also helps to be familiar with the organization environmental activities performed
and building good relationship with customers and co-workers. In fact, I enjoyed working in
PBZ LTD simply because I managed to meet almost of my expectation.
Therefore, practical training is essential and should be carried on for students to be competent by
obtaining new knowledge, integrating theory and practice, developing habit of rigorous thinking,
enhance attitude toward specialization in working place and get exposed to managerial
responsibilities. Furthermore, during practical training firms are able to receive new ideas, get
flexible and adoptable labor force that are eager to work well in the organization and do also
building closer link with collage and universities.
5.2 RECOMMENDATIONS.
In fact, practical training is the most interesting course to students because it is simple to grasp
things practically than using theory itself. Therefore, theoretical knowledge has to be
supplemented by practice to improve understanding of material learned in class.
5.3 SUGGESTIONS
Firstly, I suggest the extension of practical training period, the eight weeks are not enough to
conduct the whole program. This is because there are many things to learn during this period.
Therefore, I request to use at least three months for practical training so as to get chance of
learning more activities and obtaining enough experience at work.

10
Secondly, I suggest the teaching of computer by practice due to advancement of information and
technology the students should be taught accounting packaging like tally, quick book and pasted
which are of great importance to student taking this course.
