Critical Thinking on Life Stages

If young adults don't form close relationships, it can negatively impact their social, family, and professional lives later. Children of divorced parents are more likely to experience emotional or behavioral issues like depression, physical ailments, substance abuse, or school problems. A midlife crisis stems from feelings of lost youth and identity in Western cultures, sometimes prompting career changes, divorce, or purchases of luxury items. Common aging myths that people can improve their health at any age and genetics alone dictate health are harmful because they can cause seniors to neglect self-care. A funeral only marks the beginning of recovering from a loved one's death, as grieving typically involves stages passed over the long term.

UNIT 5 CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS

1. If young adults do not form close and trusting relationships, how may this affect them later

in life?

If young adults don’t form close and trusting relationships, it can affect their social, family, and even

professional life later in life.

2. If parents divorce, how might their children be affected? Give examples of how the children

might feel and behave.

It is common for children to develop emotional and behavioral problems after behavioral problems

after a family divorce. They may become depressed, suffer headaches or stomach problems, abuse

drugs, or get in trouble at school. An example can be: through divorce, children can be affected as

they have to learn to adapt to change more and more often. New family dynamics, new home or living

situation, school, friends, etc., can all have an effect.

3. What is a midlife crisis? Why do some experts think that the midlife crisis is a product of

Western cultures?

A midlife crisis is a transition of identity and self-confidence that can occur in middle-aged

individuals, typically 45 to 65 years old. They think this because, In the western cultures they tend to

focus on the power of youth. So in response to these feelings, people often switch careers, seek

divorce, or buy expensive items like sports cars or jewelry to cheer themselves up.

4. Give examples of myths about aging that many people believe. Why are these myths

harmful?

Some common myths about aging are: Growing older means becoming ill and living in a nursing

home. It is too late for elderly people to change their habits and improve their health. The only way

to stay healthy in old age is to inherit the right genes. These myths can affect older people in the way

that they think they can not improve their health, so they stop taking care of themselves and let

themselves die.

5. Explain why this statement is true: A funeral is just the beginning of recovery from the death

of a loved one.
This statement is true because a funeral is the beginning of a long path of accepting the loss of a

loved one. A funeral is the way people deal with their grief when a loved one dies. After the funeral,

every person is going to pass a five stage grief. Not everyone goes through all five stages or passes

through the stages in the same order.
