PMP Training & Certification Cost Analysis
PMP Training & Certification Cost Analysis
Business Case for Project Management Professional Training and Exam Certification
Context
According to Stantec’s Professional Development and Continuing Education Practice (Attachment 1), the
company has encouraged staff, as part of retention, growth and recognition, to obtain relevant training and
accreditation to enhance and drive business efforts. Since 2018, within the ES (1232) and Buildings (1156)
groups, I’ve supported projects through various stages (e.g., proposals, scheduling, invoicing, report
authoring/reviewing, monitoring/ controlling, and closeout). For Project Coordinators, such as myself, in addition
to Stantec’s internal Project Management training bootcamps, the natural progression is towards Project
Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Proposition
The best value for PMP training, is via Stantec’s training partnership with RedVector 1, versus University of
British Columbia 2 or British Columbia Institute of Technology 3 offerings. The RedVector annual subscription
starts on May 21, 2022, and this subscription gives unlimited course access to a vast course catalog library,
not just for the PMP course preparation. (A full list of RedVector courses appears in Attachment 2.)
Table 1 shows PMP training and certification costs in American and Canadian funds, as well as an
approximated timeline for completing training and taking the Project Management Institute PMP Exam.
Cost
Schedule PMP Tasks USD CADa
Quarter 2 RedVector Annual Licenceb for PMP Training self-guided modules $245 $312
Quarter 3 Project Management Institute Annual Membership and Application $129 $164
Quarter 3 Project Management Institute PMP Exam Certification Fee $405 $515
Totals $779 $991
NOTE:
a Exchange rate estimated at 27%.
b Subscription requires emailing Learning@StantecU with Business Center leader approval and a BC charge/task code.
Closing
Since early 2021, seeking out PMP accreditation has been an active pursuit for me in discussions with, and at
the encouragement of, Wendy Olk. Not only would PMP accreditation benefit me, in terms of validating skills
that I currently possess, but it would ultimately benefit Stantec, by demonstrating to clients that we value and
support standards-based education and applied knowledge.

• Stantec will reimburse 100 percent of the cost of membership fees for
approved professional or technical associations that are a mandatory
requirement for practicing in the jurisdiction where the employee is
working. Generally, this means the fee for one professional or technical
association will be reimbursed per employee. All memberships must be
approved by the employee's direct supervisor or Managing Leader
• Stantec may reimburse the cost of annual membership fees for other
approved associations that provide services, training, or information that is
relevant to the employee's job. Normally, a $200
USD equivalent maximum reimbursement is provided for these fees
Time off to attend local meetings will be allowed. If a meeting includes a meal
provided at an additional cost, the employee will be reimbursed for the meal
expense.
Time off and reimbursement of expenses may be allowed for persons attending
national meetings provided that such attendance is of benefit to the Company
and has been approved by the Regional Business Leader (RBL) or (Regional
Leader (RL) for Shared Services and Functional Service Teams). Any such
reimbursement of expenses is subject to Stantec's financial policies.
Employees are to talk with their supervisor about memberships they require
and/or that would be beneficial both to themselves and Stantec.
Professional Registration
• Stantec will reimburse 100 percent of the cost of examination and renewal
fees for registration in the jurisdiction in which the employee's office is located
• For business or professional reasons (e.g., to have licensed representation in
a specific location), Stantec may require an employee to be registered in
more than one jurisdiction. Stantec will pay 100 percent of the cost of
examination and renewal fees for these Stantec-requested registrations
• Stantec will reimburse employees for expenses incurred in traveling to other
jurisdictions if registration in these jurisdictions is requested by Stantec
With respect to reimbursement of examination fees, it is Stantec's practice to pay
the fees the first time the employee takes the registration exam. In the event that
the employee fails to pass the exam, subsequent examination fees are the
employee's responsibility.
Seminars
Stantec will make provisions for employees to attend seminars when such
attendance is in Stantec's interest. The desire to attend a seminar, even when
relevant, does not, however, guarantee that an employee will be allowed to
attend. Company priorities, such as work schedules and cash flow, take
precedence.
Any employee who wishes to attend an external seminar must obtain approval
from their Managing Leader or Regional Business Leader.
Training
Employees are to charge training time and any expenses (i.e., travel or meals)
incurred for attending formal in-house or off-site training sessions to the training
number provided by their Managing Leader. In addition, training sessions are to
be identified on the employee's timecard using the Training – Internal or Training
– External expenditure type.
