Topic/Research The Influence of Japanese Made Media on Gender Identity
Problem/Issue Among De La Salle University- Dasmarinas Students
Reasons for Choosing the The researcher’s views on gender herself is heavily shaped by
topic/issue Japanese animated series she watched growing up.
Background The research will primarily focus between two animated series
Information/Introduction that was aired in ABS-CBN during the 1990s: Pokémon and
Sailor Moon. The research will concentrate on two pairs of
character from the two series, Jesse and James from Pokémon,
Haruka and Michiru from Sailor Moon. The aim of this
research is to determine whether the aforementioned shows
have an impact on how an individual developed into their
gender identity as they grew older.
The first episode of Pokémon was released on October 1, 1999,
on the channel 7 also known as GMA. Pokémon is about ten-
year-old Ash Ketchum as he strived to be the greatest Pokémon
trainer in the world. With the help from his partner, Pikachu,
and new friends on they meet on the way, together they
successfully thwart the plans of Team Rocket. Team Rocket is
an evil organization that kidnaps different types of Pokémon.
Sailor Moon was first aired on ABS-CBN on October 1994.
Sailor Moon is about Usagi Tsukino an ordinary lackadaisical
fourteen-year-old schoolgirl meets a magical talking cat named
Luna. Luna was tasked to track down the long-lost princess of
the Moon Kingdom and fighting the evil forces from the Dark
Kingdom. With the help of Luna, Usagi can transform into her
alter ego- Sailor Moon. She teams up with her friends in
defending Earth from Queen Beryl and her minions.
The research will use quantitative methods. The sample size for
the survey are students from DLSU-D ages 19-21 that grew up
watching these shows.
