Components of an academic article

The image below identifies 5 crucial components of an academic article. Here is a description of those 5
elements and where they can be found.

1. This includes the journal name, volume number, issue information, DOI number, and publication
date. Typically found in the corners at the top. These elements are crucial in order to evaluate
them and determine where the information comes from. All scholarly and peer reviewed articles
will contain this information.
2. In the opposite corner, we typically see the name of the publisher displayed prominently. This
enables the reader to research the publisher and learn about their publication practices which
includes peer review.
3. The authors are clearly listed. Typically, we will also see their academic associations. This
enables the reader to research their work and learn more about the institutions that they are
part of. It also makes more research by the authors accessible.
4. The majority of academic articles will have an abstract that describes the topics that are
explored as well as some information about the methodology. These abstracts help the reader
decide if they want to review the full article. It is typically found at the beginning of the article
after the title and author information.
5. Contact information for the authors or the publisher should be clearly listed. The location of the
information varies, but it is often found at the bottom of the title page of an article.

Additional Elements:
 Clear sections within the text such as "methodology", "literature review", "findings",
"discussion", "introduction and conclusion"
 In-text citations that clearly show which information comes from research.
 A complete reference list with proper citations.
