Setting up KMS on domain

NOTE: KMS Server only actives Volume Licensing Editions.

1 - Create DNS SRV Record:

To manually create a KMS SRV record in a Microsoft DNS server on the DNS server.
1. Open DNS Manager
2. Click the DNS server on which you need to create the SRV resource record.
3. In the console tree, expand Forward Lookup Zones, right-click the domain, and
Then click Other New Records.
4. Scroll down the list, click Service Location (SRV), and then click Create Record.
5. Type the following information:
a. Service: _VLMCS
b. Protocol: _TCP
c. Port number: 1688
d. Host offering the service: <FQDN_of_KMS_Host> kms.mydomain.com
6. When you are finished, click OK, and then click Done.

2 - Create a basic Virtual Machine or use an existing system and run KMS.exe

Activation

Once you have completed the above steps, any Windows 7 or Server 2008 system
you join to the domain will Automatically activate against you KMS system.
Activation is good for 6 months; systems will activate themselves as long as they are
on the domain.

IF Errors occur in the activation, it is probably because you are using a Retail
Version instead of a Volume License Version.

Go to the “Change your License to Volume Licensing“ section below and then
come back to this step and continue.

After changing the key it will try to activate but will error out, once it errors out.
Click on Activate online, now it will activate against your KMS server.
No Domain Setup.
If you don’t have a domain, then just rum KMS.exe on any system and leave it running
while you register the systems.

To register a client manually

1 - Open a Command window run as administrator.

2 – Point the client to the KMS Server, from the command prompt run the following
cscript \windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /skms your-kms-ip:1688

3 - Then run
cscript \windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato

This should activate your system, if it fails try it again 2 or 3 times should do it.

Check status of you activation run:

From the command prompt run the following command:
Slmgr.vbs /dlv

Change your License to Volume Licensing

Right Click your computer and select properties.
Click the “Change product key” link, now copy and paste the appropriate key for your
product from the list below. The system might try to activate and it might fail, that’s ok. Let
it fail, once that screen close. Click on the link above, that says “Activate windows online”
this should activate against you KMS server. If it fails, click it again.
