“Kalakaar" is a captivating documentary that delves into the rich tapestry

of life within the Kumhar colony, unraveling the human stories and
enduring legacy of the potters who shape the clay with skillful hands,
transcending generations and preserving an ancient craft against the
backdrop of modern challenges.
 Concept Report

Documentary: Kalakaar

We are making a documentary on the kumhars of the kumhar colony

Uttam nagar. During the festive seasons one of the most important
people who make our festivals gleeful are these kumhars who make
beautiful diyas and we use these diyas to decorate our homes.We aim at
showing behind the scenes of how these beautiful diyas and decorative
materials are made and how these kumhars of kumhar colony are
maintaining there pottery legacy from ages. During our research period
we talked to potter named Mukesh and he agreed to tell and show us
everything we need to know about them.The documentary will swiftly
cover the lifestyle of the artisans , their work and their legacy. Through
this documentary we want to generate awareness among the people
about the tough , hardworking life of these artisans.

 RESEARCH REPORT

Location- Kumhar Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi.

Date- 17th October 2023, Tuesday, 2-4pm
Members visited- Pranjal and Nysa.
The visit was done to surf the place and examine if the documentary can
be shot there. At the time, the members mentioned above discovered a
colony with several shops selling Diya’s and other pottery products
which were bought from the houses in that colony itself that makes and
design it in bulk. The members interviewed few Diya makers and
managed to get their consent on clicking their pictures and works videos
and convinced them to coordinate with our documentary shooting. They
came across a family that makes, design and sells Diya on their own.
The family’s owner name is- Mukesh Kumar who agreed to show us the
making process of the Diya’s till its designing and to interview him and
his family about this legacy.
Thus, our documentary will initially revolve around the kumhar colony
and its hidden gem of the Diya market. We will showcase the making
process of Diya’s along with Mukesh’s life story and how he and his
family continue the legacy that has been continuing for last 40 years.
