New technologies (such as artificial intelligence, cloud technology, blockchain, advanced
robotics, internet of things, genomics or 3D printing) have experienced remarkable progress in
the last decade, have made obsolete many of the processes, methods and strategies of
companies around the world.
We can see from robots that do manual work at high speeds and with great efficiency, leaving
certain guilds behind (thus dragging a generational change of jobs), databases and information
within easy reach thanks to cloud storage; to public government, where job offers are offered
transparently thanks to blockchain technology.
From my point of view, the business relationship with customers has radically advanced. What
used to be face-to-face or by telephone has been extended to an innumerable range of
options; from online applications to shared databases, joint programming of computer
systems, etc. I believe that with these advances a difficulty arises, and that is to propose an
efficient communication strategy since the company has to choose from a wide range of
options the most correct and efficient model of communication, which in many cases does not
have to be the fastest.
Of all the different technologies proposed in the article, the one that strikes me the most
because of its potential (and I'm sure I don't know how far it can go) is artificial intelligence.
The fact that machines and computers develop the ability to acquire knowledge through
interaction and experience is something as far-fetched as it is powerful. If companies in the
coming decade can use this technology correctly, we are facing a radical change in business
management.
With this technology, I imagine things as powerful as computers driving strategic business
judgments under certain conditions, dealing with customers with a human voice, making
ethical and moral decisions in human resources departments, being able to speed up
processes by detecting errors that humans ignore, or even artificial intelligence can invent or
develop further technologies. That is why I consider that Artificial Intelligence is the top 1
technology that can radically transform the business world.
Note that in many circumstances the different technologies depend on each other. For
example, for a machine to learn something new, it may require cloud storage and at the same
time, being a robot to perform this process.
A simple example of a company whose technology has changed some of its processes is the
company KPMG. A couple of years ago, this auditing company opted for RPA (Robotic Process
Automation) technology, which allows it to digitize physical documents, process the
information and report it to different interested parties. This makes the simple job of moving
data from a physical document to a computer, which can take hours depending on the volume
of documents; into a few minutes. Now KPMG can focus the efforts of its workers on decision
making, data processing or other functions, eliminating a task that did not add value. The
proper use of all technological possibilities combined whit an accurate company strategy can
make a significant difference; behold the importance of technology investment.
