Going Back to College Later in Life

Who is the typical college student in the Age of Enrollment in U.S. Colleges, 2016
U.S.? If you think it’s a young person
Ages 14–17
who recently finished high school, then
1%
think again! The truth is,
5 in 2018, only 40% of students who started
college in the U.S. were between 18 and 21 Ages 35+
years old. More than 20% were already 16%
older than 30! Ages 30–34
8% Ages 18–21
Why do older people go back to 40%
10 college? Ages 25–29
There are several reasons why people go 16%
back to college later in life. Some people
started college but weren’t able to Ages 22–24
19%
graduate when they were
15 younger. Perhaps they needed to earn
money, raise a family, or do
military service. Without a degree, they are now unable to progress in their jobs. Other people
graduated many years ago, but they now find that their skills are out-of-date because of new
developments in technology. Then there are people who already have
20 a degree and a successful career, but now they’ve decided to do something completely different
with their lives. For others, it’s simply the joy of learning that makes them go back to college.
What are the advantages and challenges?
There are advantages to being an older student. Mature students have skills,
25 knowledge, and experience that they didn’t have when they were 18.
But being an older student can also be more challenging. For example, many older students
already have jobs. They have to find ways to balance their studies with working full-time,
doing household chores, and looking after a family. Older students may also have forgotten
some of the things they learned at high school, such as
30 algebra and physics. This can be challenging if they need those subjects for their degree!
How do colleges help older students?
Many colleges in the U.S. want to help older students overcome these challenges. They offer
flexible programs to fit in with students’ busy lives. Students can choose to attend
35 classes after hours, on weekends, or online. Some schools also give college credit for skills and
knowledge that people already have. Sometimes they help students graduate in less than four
years, which means they can start earning more money sooner—or even start another degree!

The Ultimate Adventure

Imagine this: You’re traveling through a
mysterious place far from home. It’s cold and
dark, and without your special ship you
5 won’t survive. There’s no sunlight, and all you
can see are strange, floating lights. No, you’re
not in space. You’re exploring the ocean!
This might sound incredible, but it’s actually
easier to go to space than to the deepest
10 parts of the sea. To travel more than 650
feet underwater, you’ll need a very specialized ship, or submarine, that can handle the extremely high
water pressure. So while tourists have explored the ocean in submarines since the 1980s, they haven’t
been able to go very deep—only about 130 feet. Today, however, advances in submarine technology
mean that tourists can travel much, much
15 deeper. But what exactly will they see?
The deep sea is home to some of the strangest animals on Earth: see-through creatures, fish with
no eyes, animals with weird, flashing lights ... We haven’t even discovered them all! Down here
tourists can also see the bones of dead sea animals as well as old shipwrecks.
20 One tour company wants to take tourists to one of the most famous shipwrecks of all: the
Titanic, which sank in 1912 and now lies 12,500 feet underwater. That’s a little more than two
miles deep. According to this tour company, more people have traveled into space than have
visited the wreck of the Titanic. For some people, this will certainly be the ultimate adventure.
So how much will it cost?
25 To visit the Titanic, you’ll need to pay more than $105,000 per person for a 10-day trip. Or
you could buy your own submarine to explore and discover the ocean. For
$2.5 million, you can get a submarine that can travel 1,000 feet underwater. To go 6,500 feet
deep, you’ll need a submarine that costs about $5.5 million. As well as safe and well equipped,
these submarines are also very luxurious. They have huge windows,
30 kitchens, bars, and libraries. Some even have Wi-Fi!
What about you? Will you be going on a deep sea adventure soon?
