Walter

1. Ambitious
Walter believes that doing investment with the money from the insurance will be the only way of
getting wealthy, though it is very risky. However, Walter is such as person who is willing to take
risks to reach his goal. Hence, I conclude that he is an ambitious man.

2. Mentally immature
Walter, in the play, conveys that he wants to be regarded as a “man” rather than a “boy”.
Nevertheless, Walter is considered as a boy by Mama just because of his mental immaturity.
During the play, he hurts the relations between family members due to this immaturity.
Example: 1. To Ruth (“Who cares about you?”) – mean; 2. To Mama (“So you butchered a dream
of mine.”) – egoistic

3. Family-loving
As the two characterizations of Walter above shows, Walter extremely loves his family and he
wants to make some positive changes to it. Actually, everything Walter does in the play is meant to
make the Younger family better. Unfortunately, some of his actions don’t lead to good results.

1. Ambitious: Walter is highly ambitious and dreams of providing a better life for himself and
his family. He is determined to invest in a liquor store business with his friends, Willy and
Bobo, despite the objections of his mother.
2. Frustrated: Walter is deeply frustrated with his current situation. He feels unfulfilled and
trapped in his job as a chauffeur and resents the fact that he cannot provide more for his
family.
3. Rebellious: Walter is somewhat rebellious and resents his mother's attempts to control his life.
He believes that he should be able to make his own decisions and take risks, even if they are
not always the most responsible choices.
4. Impulsive: Walter often makes impulsive decisions without fully considering the
consequences. For example, he agrees to give all of Mama's insurance money to Willy to
invest in a potentially risky business deal.
5. Insecure: Despite his outward confidence and ambition, Walter is also deeply insecure. He
worries that he is not living up to his potential and that he is not respected by his family or
society as a whole.
6. Emotional: Walter is a highly emotional character who often struggles to control his feelings.
He becomes angry and frustrated when he feels like he is not being heard or respected, and he
is deeply hurt by his mother's criticism.
7. Prideful: Walter has a strong sense of pride and resents being treated as inferior or less than by
others. He wants to be seen as a successful and respected member of society, and he feels like
the liquor store business will help him achieve that status.
8. Strained family relationships: Walter's relationship with his mother is strained, as they have
very different ideas about how to use the insurance money. His wife Ruth is also frustrated
with him for neglecting his family responsibilities in favor of pursuing his own dreams.
