ASTRO’s My Style(내멋대로) Personal Review.

The track started off with the sound of thunderstorms, raindrops and later on followed by a
sorrowful violin piece. It was more than enough to narrate the dejection that the main
character of the song felt. This is when a made up scenario is played in my head where
Moonbin takes over the frame in a dark room of his with papers stacked on his study table
and of course, heavy rain and thunderstorms as his background. Remember this detail as I’m
going to elaborate further on it. This may sound like a very biased remark coming from a
Moonbin stan but listen..

Bin had mentioned in a vlive back in 2017 (it was a year after Summer Vibes album was
released) that he hated his singing voice. He talked about himself trying to find his vocal
colour and that he was still learning to embrace the uniqueness of his voice as well as
discovering a vocal style that suits his voice. However, in My Style, he did effortlessly give his
all out in the track. I can’t quiet convey how I felt about his vocal in My Style as I’m trying to
put all my thoughts into words as if I’m talking to someone who doesn’t know about ASTRO
and Moonbin that well. There’s so much I want to say, stress onto, and share with everyone.

But let’s go back to the song shall we? Let’s pick up the second after first beat comes. Did you
notice that the violin, the thunderstorms and the rain slowly fading out as Bin’s part comes
on? How the despondency of the piece and the rain was equally replaced with Bin’s powerful
vocal. He effortlessly maintained the sadness with a powerful start and managed to play with
our feelings using his voice crack skills(he was born with it but let’s call it a skill since he
knew very well how to make use of it) to deliver the message of the song one by one. I’m
proud to say that the voice crack of his was such a good way to disclose his identity to
listeners. From now onwards, we could say that the main character of this song is a young
teenage boy whose dream was crushed by the hurtful words of adults. Yup, gave it a listen
again and it breaks my heart so much but let’s not get too emotional since I still have a lot to
say.

(add more points abt rocky’s lyrics)And then Rocky’ part comes on. This is when he reminds
us that Bin was not the only boy whose dreams was crushed, there are actually more of them.
We can conclude that it’s actually a song about a group of male teenagers that share the same
luck and experience of having their dream crushed by adults(parents, teachers,
grandparents, etc). I won’t be talking about the lyrics in detail as it will take longer
paragraphs and it will get boring. I’ll skip to Sanha’s part which is the chorus; the youngest
voice of them all. I know I’ve said this many times already but it gets more and more
depressing as the boys pass the batons but Sanha. He was only 16 when they recorded this
song. Logically, boys his age are just about to explore the world. Maybe he had just found his
dream, or maybe a path that he believes would bring him happiness and satisfaction in this
world. He maybe only needed one or two advices from adults whom he believed would know
about the world better than he does so he talked about his passions but what he got in return
was opposition from his adults which leads to the feeling of dejection.

MJ’s part then comes on, as the oldest among them all, he becomes the first to lead the group
towards their passions. “I won't turn around quietly. Go and catch me now. I'll make you
chase me till you regret it.” He doesn’t want to give up neither he wants his friends to give
their dreams up over adults’ objections about their passions.
