Summary of Procedures
The usher introduces the child to the examiner.
1 After asking the child ‘What’s your name?’, the examiner familiarises the child with the scene picture first, e.g.
‘Where is the sea?’ and then asks the child to point out certain items on the scene picture, e.g. ‘Where is the house?’ ‘Where are
the dogs?’
The examiner then asks the child to put two object cards in two places on the scene picture, e.g. ‘Put the radio next to the shells.’
And then ‘Put the helicopter in front of the ship.’
2 The examiner asks questions about two of the people or things in the scene picture, e.g.
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: bird) ‘What colour is it?’ (Answer: white) ‘How many birds are there?’ (Answer: three) ‘What’s the green
fish doing?’ (Answer: jumping).
The examiner also asks the child to give more information about an object or person in the scene picture, e.g. ‘Tell me about the
small child.’
3 The examiner asks questions about four other object cards. Various answers are possible, e.g.
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: pen) ‘Have you got a pen?’ (Answer: yes/no) ‘What do you draw with at school?’ (Answer: a pencil).
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: lemonade) ‘Do you drink lemonade?’ (Answer: yes/no) ‘What do you drink with your dinner?’ (Answer:
water).
‘What are these?’ (Answer: socks) ‘Are you wearing yellow socks today?’
(Answer: yes/no) ‘What colour are your favourite clothes?’ (Answer: blue)
Pre-A1 Starters Speaking 2
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: book) ‘Do you like reading books?’ (Answer: yes/no) ‘What do you read about?’ (Answer: animals).
4 The examiner asks questions about the child, e.g.
‘How old are you?’
‘How many people are there in your family?’
‘What do you like doing with your family?’
The examiner then ends the test thanking the child and saying goodbye.
Note that the examiner will use back-up questions at all stages to support the child if necessary, e.g. in Part One, ‘What’s your
name?’ – ‘Is your name Maria?’ ‘Where’s the sea?’ – ‘Is this the sea?’
