Air Pollution Analysis in Mexico City

Mexico City experienced rapid urbanization and industrialization in the 20th century, which led to increased air pollution levels. In the 1980s and 1990s, Mexico City was listed as the most polluted city in the world. However, through policies like "Hoy no circula" and ProAire, which restricted vehicle use and promoted sustainable development, air quality has improved significantly. Now, despite its large population, Mexico City ranks as the 917th most polluted city globally, showing the success of its efforts to reduce pollution.

4. Identify the main idea of each paragraph and make a list of them.

● In the 20th century, Mexico City went through a process of industrialization and
urbanization, the population grew substantially from 3.1 million to 14 million, this
increase together with the increase in labor and human activities caused a decline in air
quality. . Pollution peaked as did its main pollutants.
● In 1992, Mexico City was listed by the United Nations as the most polluted city in the
world. However, despite having an estimated population of 22 million, air pollution has
decreased and went from being the most polluted city to 917th place.

● During the 1980s and 1990s, recognizing the severe problem of air pollution, the
government implemented a series of political strategies with the intention of reducing
pollutants, among them the most notable is the "Hoy no circula" that was first introduced
in 1989. Despite this, a few months after its application, unfavorable results were
recorded as there was an increase in the purchase of private vehicles.

● When it was recognized that the "Hoy no circula" policy was not effective, an effective
long-term strategy was created in 1995 called ProAire, a series of strategies to achieve
sustainable development. Currently ProAire is in its fourth iteration, presenting several
specific measures that seek to reduce public dependence on vehicles.
● Mexico has yet to set a net zero target, despite ratifying the Paris Agreement. According
to the Climate Action Tracker (CAT), the ambition of Mexico to fight climate change is
highly insufficient due to its lack of a concrete decarbonisation plan. Although
GHG-related policies are not directly linked to air pollution,
