Learning and Keeping a Learning Log

Learning should not be left to chance. It is best done as a deliberate, conscious


process, and one way of helping this along is to keep a learning log.

Keeping a learning log can help you become more analytical and focussed on self-
development: the log is tangible evidence of a genuine commitment to your own
development and can enhance and maximise learning from everyday experience

Learning logs encourage planning and review, and also force you (if that is what it
takes!) to search out and acknowledge learning opportunities, and then make the
most of them.

Learning Logs:

 Start by thinking back over recent experience (e.g. your performance in a


meeting), and selecting a part of it that was significant or important to you
 Write a detailed account of what happened – without putting any effort into
thinking about what you learnt
 Then, list the conclusions you have reached as a result of your experience – your
learning points
 Finally decide which learning points you want to implement in the future – in
effect the changes in behaviour you want to encourage in yourself, and write an
action plan that covers:
 What you’re going to do
 When you’re going to do it
 Spell out your action plans as precisely as possible so that you are clear about
what you have to do and ensure that it is realistic

Describe the event without thinking about what you learnt – concentrate on what happened
