Exploring Land and Water Features in National Parks
Objective:
Students will be able to understand how people interact with land and water features in national
parks by researching and creating a poster board presentation.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed on their poster board presentation, demonstrating their understanding
of the interaction between people and land/water features in a national park.
Key Points:
● Identify different land and water features found in national parks
● Explain how people interact with these features for recreational and conservation
purposes
● Understand the importance of preserving and respecting natural resources in national
parks
Opening:
● Show pictures of various national parks and ask students what they notice about the
land and water features
● Discuss with students why national parks are important and what activities people
might do there
Introduction to New Material:
● Introduce key points through a mini-lesson with visual aids and real-life examples
● Common Misconception: People can use land and water features in national parks
however they want without consequences
Guided Practice:
● Provide students with scenarios where they have to decide how to interact with
specific land or water features
● Scaffold questioning from identifying features to explaining the reasons behind their
interactions
● Monitor student performance by circulating the classroom and providing feedback as
students work
Independent Practice:
● Students will research a national park of their choice and create a poster board
showing the different land and water features present, along with how people interact
with them
● Behavioral expectations include staying on task, using reliable sources, and presenting
their findings neatly and clearly
Closing:
● Have students present their poster boards to the class and summarize one thing they
learned about people's interactions with land and water features in national parks
Extension Activity:
● For early finishers, provide them with the opportunity to create a short skit
showcasing a scenario of responsible interaction with nature in a national park
Homework:
● Students can write a short paragraph reflecting on why it's important to preserve
natural resources in national parks and how they can contribute to this effort
Standards Addressed:
● Next Generation Science Standards: 3-ESS3-1 - "Make a claim about the merit of a
design solution that reduces the impacts of a weather-related hazard."
● Common Core State Standards ELA: RI.3.7 - "Use information gained from
illustrations and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text."
