INFORMAL EMAIL
PERLIS 2022
You received an email from your friend, Julia who needs your advice on what to buy for
her mother as a birthday gift.

Hi,

My mom’s birthday is just around the corner. I would like to surprise her with a birthday
gift. What present should I get her then? Why do you think I should get her that present?
Where can I go to buy her the suggested present?

I'll be waiting for your reply. Bye!

Love,
Julia

Subject : Surprise birthday gift for your mom

Hi Julia,

Happy birthday in advance to your mom! I believe no matter what gift you are getting her,
she would adore it as your presence is her best present!

Jokes aside, I do have an incredible suggestion in mind. Your mom strikes me as being
someone who is really trendy so getting her a personalised tote bag from Christy Ng will
never go wrong. You can even choose from a variety of designs as well as colours. Since it
is personalised, her tote bag will be a unique one for sure. Moreover, whenever your mom
uses the tote bag, she will think of you!

I also believe that her new tote bag will make her friends green with envy as she has such
a (thoughtful / considerate) daughter. Alright, one last point to seal the deal is that
Christy Ng’s tote bags are perfect for all occasions! You can purchase the tote bag online
on their website and have it delivered to your doorstep. If you are afraid it will break the
surprise, then head over to their physical stores in either One Utama or Midvalley to get it.

I hope your mom will love the gift and enjoy her red-letter day! Do update me about her
reaction and see you soon!

Best regards,
Civic

MODEL STORY
A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed

“Hey Jess! I’m so glad you can make it!” I beamed.

“How can I miss my best friend’s graduation? Congratulations!” Jess
replied as I enveloped her in a warm hug.
Yes, Jess and I were best friends since secondary school. We had been
through a lot of ups and downs together. And now, I was going to graduate
with honours as a doctor. I had also been chosen as the best graduate of the
year. Gosh, I could not believe how time could whizz by so quickly!
Gradually, I started to trot down memory lane.
Jess and I were poles apart. We met at the tender age of 13. At that time,
Jess looked pretty and had a cheerful smile. She also had an outgoing
personality and was basically a social butterfly. On the other hand, I was as
skinny as a skeleton and I had acnes all over my face. Needless to say, due to
my appearance, I was shy and often felt inferior. Maybe it was the reason why
I became the target of bullies back then.
On that fateful day when we became friends, I was carrying an armload
full of textbooks. Actually, I could just put the textbooks inside the school
locker. However, I took them home on that day because I had a plan. I could
not endure all the bullying anymore. Just when I was deep in thoughts, my
textbooks fell onto the ground as I slipped.
While I was still on the ground, Jess hurried over to help me pick up my
scattered books. Somehow, we ended up walking home together. Along the
way, we chatted with each other. “Tomorrow, let’s walk to school together too!”
Jess said before we parted ways. I looked at her with tears in my eyes,
“Really?” That was how our friendship began. From the age of 13, we walked
to and from school until we were 17 years old. In between these years, I had
become confident as Jess became my pillar of support and encouragement. In
fact, I was blessed to call her my best friend. As university life commenced,

PREPARED BY : Miss Civic 23

MODEL STORY
our friendship remained as thick as thieves. And now, Jess attended my
graduation ceremony!
“Hello everyone. I am Mary Chong. Of course, there are many people I
have to thank for being able to come this far. They are my beloved parents,
lecturers and friends. There is, however, a special person whom I must convey
my gratitude to. Without her, there is no Mary Chong. You see, when I was 13
years old, I was the ultimate geek. Bullies love to target me. They bullied me
to an extent that I wanted to end my life.
So, I walked home one day with all of my textbooks. I decided to commit
suicide and I did not want my parents to go to school to collect my textbooks
after I die. I have depression. To cut a long story short, I did not manage to
kill myself that day. My best friend, Jess Ong, came to my rescue. She
befriended me, and she showed me that there is still hope in this world. She
showed me that I mattered, even though I was a nobody at that time. For that,
Jess, I thank you with all my heart!”
Traitor tears rolled down my cheeks involuntarily. My best friend is
the epitome of a friend in need is a friend indeed. I looked at Jess from the
stage, and we exchanged smiles.

Success is no accident. It is
hard work, perseverance,
learning, studying,
sacrifice and most of all,
love of what you are doing
or learning to do.
