CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOPRENEURSHIP

Topic 1: Definition

Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

- Entrepreneurship was given variety of definitions by different people such as: Howard Stevenson,
who said that it is the pursuit of opportunity beyond resources controlled; Roy Thurik and Sander
Wennekers, who said that it it the manifestation of ability and willingness of individuals on a team or
individual; and William Baumol, who defined it as all kinds of opportunity seeking behavior.
- In general, entrepreneurship is the practice of embarking on a new business or reviving an existing
business by pooling together a bunch of resources in order to exploit new found opportunities.
- Entrepreneur, on the other hand, is the innovator or developer who recognizes and seizes
opportunities, converts these opportunities into workable/marketable ideas; adds value through
time, efforts, money or skills; assumes the risks of the competitive marketplace to implement these
ideas; realizes the rewards from these efforts.
- Engineering entrepreneurs organize, manage, and assume risk of an engineering business enterprise
They solve problems that exist in the market and create long term value.
- Two types of engineer entrepreneurs are adaptor and inventor, who do things better which includes
cheaper products with higher quality and do things differently which could be risky but new,
respectively.

Types of Entrepreneurship

- There are different types of entrepreneurship that are: based on risks— innovative
entrepreneurship, imitative entrepreneurship, fabian entrepreneurship, and drone
entrepreneurship; based on type of business— agricultural entrepreneurship, manufacturing
entrepreneurship, trading entrepreneurship; based on use of technology— technical
entrepreneurship and non-technical entrepreneurship; based on ownership— corporate
entrepreneurship, private entrepreneurship, state entrepreneurship, and joint
entrepreneurship; based on size enterprise— micro enterprise, small-scale enterprise, medium-
scale enterprise, and large-scale enterprise; based on gender— women entrepreneurship; based
on social problems— social entrepreneurship.
