Learning curve
Learning curve is a graphical representation of how learning takes place in a particular
situation. For drawing the graphs we divide the horizontal scale [ x axis] Into units of time or
number of trials required for learning and the vertical scale into appropriate units of
accomplishment, material retained, puzzles solved etc.
Types of learning curves
Learning process is governed by so many internal as well as external factors. Hence there
arise a number of learning curves. A learning curve depicts the rate of improvement in
various learning situations. There are four types of learning curves
1.straight line curve : such a curve shows a constant or uniform rate of progress in learning
2. convex curve : it is negatively accelerated curve which shows rapid initial
improvement in learning and slows down with time
3. concave curve: it is a positively accelerated which shows slow initial improvement in
learning that increases with time ultimately leading towards the mastery over learning
material.
4. concave- convex curve: it is a ‘s’ shaped the learning curve formed by the
combination of concave and convex curve depending on rapid or slow initial success
followed by reverse condition in learning.
Uses of learning curves
1. to acquaint himself with individual differences in learning among his students.
2. to improve the method of teaching.
3. to provide the opportunity of self-appraisal.
4. to understand the emotional life and other personality characteristics of the learner.
5. to select appropriate teaching aids.
6. to maintain proper account of the regular progress of his students.
7. it helps the students to acquaint themselves with their own progress.
8. to compare the progress of student with that of other students in the class.
