Understanding Digital Imaging Basics

Digital images are visual representations created and stored digitally, unlike analog images captured on film. Digital images are composed of pixels and offer advantages like easy editing and sharing. They can be manipulated, compressed to reduce file size, and have pushed the boundaries of visual creativity and expression.

Digital imaging

Digital images are visual representations that are created and stored in digital
format. Unlike analog images, which are captured on film or photographic prints,
digital images are created using electronic devices such as digital cameras or
scanner. These images are stored in the form of digital files that can be viewed
and manipulated on electronic device such as computer, smartphones or
tablets.
Digital images have revolutionized the way we share and consume visual
content in the digital age. These images, which are created, stored and
manipulated electronically, offer a number of advantages and possibilities
compared to traditional analog images.
Digital images are they made up of pixels are combined to form the complete
image. One of the advantages of digital images is their ease of manipulation.
With the use of image editing software, it is possible to modify aspects such as
brightness, contrast, color saturation, cropping, and removing unwanted
elements. This allows users to fix errors, improve image quality, and create
special effects.
Additionally, digital images can be easily shared over the internet. With just a
few clicks, it is possible to send images by email, post them on social networks
or share them on cloud storage platforms. This has facilitated the dissemination
and sharing of images around the world.
Another important aspect of digital images is the ability to compress files to
reduce their size without losing too much quality. This is especially useful when
it comes to sharing images on online platforms with file size limitations.
Digital images have also given rise to new forms of art and creative expression.
Image manipulation, graphic design, and digital photography are just a few
examples of how digital images have pushed the boundaries of visual creativity.
Some of the aspects of the digital image are:
Resolution: the resolution of a digital image refers to seeing spatial details in the
image. It’s all about the clarity of the photo and how much you can increase it
without losing quality or making it look blurry.
Pixel dimensions: are given horizontally and vertically to help characterize the
resolution of digital cameras. Calculate PPI/DPI for scanned images by dividing
the document measurement by the aligned pixel dimension.
Color: digital images can be in color or grayscale. Color image are composed of
pixels that represent different, colors typically using the RGB (red, green, blue)
color model.
File format: digital images are typically stored in file formats such as JPEG,
PNG, or TIFF. These file formats determine how the image data is compressed
and stored.
These characteristics can vary depending on the specific requirements of the
application or device used to create or display the digital image
1. Photography
2. Art and design
3. Advertising and marketing
4. Medical imaging
5. Archiving and preservation
6. Virtual reality and augmented reality
However, there are also challenges associated with digital images. The quality
of a digital image can be affected by compression, which is the process of
reducing file size to save storage space.
In summary, digital images have transformed the way we see and share the
world visually. Their ability to be edited, stored and transmitted efficiently has
revolutionized the way we interact with images. As technology continues to
advance, it is exciting to think about the future possibilities that digital imaging
will bring to us.
