1- 51062 Time: Three hours Register No.| | BTech Degree Examination May 2022 Sixth Semester Chemical Engineering 18CHT63 — PROCESS MODELING AND SIMULATION (Regulation 2018) Answer all Questions Part~A (10 x 2= 20 marks) 1. Provide the significance of black box principle. 2. A binary liquid mixture with 50 mole % of each component is in equilibrium with its vapour at 400 K. At this temperature, the vapour pressure of the component 1 and 2 are 180 and 120 kPa respectively. Determine the vapour phase mole fraction of component 1. 3. Identify the number of model equations that can be developed for steady state conditions ina flash drum. 4. Compute the fraction of solute that can be extracted in a single stage counter current solvent extraction using the numerical values of $= 19 R, m= 1 and e= 0.2Kg/m* 5, Identify the reactor that can be modelled using lumped parameter system and justify your answer. 6. Write the component continuity equations of a CSTR with the following simultaneous first Ky Ky order isothermal reactions taking place; A->B; A> 7. Write down the assumptions involved in the modelling of a mixing tank. 8. Schematically represent a stirred tank heater and write down its total continuity equation, 9. Highlight the scope of process simulation in process industries with suitable example. 10. Mention any four software used for process modeling and simulation. Ay ah b, 12. a, Part~B (5 x 16 = 80 marks) Elaborate on the classification of mathematical modelling as applied to (16) chemical Engineering. (OR) Elucidate a detail on fundamental laws used in modelling. (16) Develop model equations for each tray in a binary distillation column with (16) a re boiler and a total condensers. State the assumptions clearly. (OR) Maximum: 100 marks [oo1.Ky) [co1,.Ka} [c02,K1] [c02,Ks] [oosK1) [eoa,ka} [cou.Kn) [oak 1€05,K1) {€05,K1] [c01,K2] [C01,K2} {c02,K3] 13, 14, id ii) Develop a model for a backward feed triple effect evaporator that includes heat balance across each effect individually and a material balance over the whole system. State the assumptions clearly and support your answer with a suitable process flow diagram. Develop the model equations of a double pipe heat exchanger where in the resistance to heat transfer from a condensing fluid to inner fluid can be represented by convective heat transfer coefficients on both sides of the heat transfer wall. Assume that resistance from wall is negligible, but the wall has finite heat capacity. Consider a plug flow tubular reactor in which the temperature changes as the fluid flows down the pipe. Assume no radial gradients in velocity, concentration or temperature. The reactor has a cooling jacket around it. Heat can be transferred from the process fluid reactants and products at temperature T to the metal wall of the reactor at temperature Tm. The heat is subsequently transferred to the cooling water. Derive model equations for this system, (OR) ‘A first order irreversible exothermic reaction A> B occurs in a series of three perfectly mixed CSTRS. Feed enters the first reactor and product leaves the third reactor. Derive the mass balance and component continuity ‘equations considering isothermal and constant holdups. Assume constant density for the system, which is a binary mixture of A and B. A dilute solution at 20°C is added to well stirred tank at the rate of 180kg/h. A heating coil having an area of 0.9m” is located in the tank and contains steam condensing at150°C. The hot liquid leaves at 120kg/h and at the temperature of the solution in the tank. There is 500 kg of solution at 40°C at the start of the operation. Calculate the outlet temperature after one hour. Data:- U=824kCal/hm?°C and C, =1kCal/Ke'C. (OR) Consider two tank systems. Assume that the flow rate of an effluent stream from a tank is proportional to the hydrostatie liquid pressure that causes the flow of liquid. The cross-sectional area of tank 1 is Au and of tank 2 is ‘As, The flow rates Fi, Frand Fs are in m*/min and area in m?, Draw process flow diagram for the following types and develop model equations by stating the assumptions clearly. i) Non-interacting tanks ii) Interacting tanks Discuss in detail on the process simulation approaches for steady-state simulation with appropriate flow sheet/steps.
