SECTION B
COMPREHENSIONAND SUMMARY
Read this passage and answer the question that follows.
SHOPPING WISELY
1. Supermarkets are there to provide a service, as well as to make a profit.
Therefore they always want to make sure that their customers buy as much
as possible. Whether you really need something or just want it, the
supermarket owner tries to make sure that you buy it. How do supermarkets
persuade people to buy more?
2. Most supermarkets try to provide pleasant shopping environments. The shop
itself will usually be attractively painted and decorated, and the goods
arranged to catch the customer’s eye.
3. It is a fact that most shoppers do not really make up their minds what to buy
until they are in the supermarket. After all, how many of us take the trouble
to prepare an elaborate shopping list before we go shopping? Very few ,I am
sure. Even if we do prepare a shopping list, do we stick to it? Researchers
claim that up to 60% of all shoppers only decide what to buy at the spot.
Supermarkets know this fact very well and they take advantage of it in many
ways. They can offer discount or special prices, give out ‘’free’’ items to
customers who make special purchases and so on. When you see a shop
offering, say, three items for the price of two, look out! The shop may not be
Generous, but looking for a way to make you buy more than what you need.
Another common trick is to let customers earn tickets which will make them
qualify to win prizes. Somebody has to pay for the cost of all those
advertisement, tickets and prizes and it is the customer!
4. Supermarkets also like to present “fresh food to make their customers believe
they are buying health food. Many supermarkets sell foods either tinned,
bottled ,packed in plastic or frozen and it is always pleasant to find something
fresh out of a garden, or a farm, such as cabbages, tomatoes, or eggs, fresh
brad which also does the trick. A bakery in a supermarket does not only
provide health food but fill the price with a homely, delicious aroma that will
put customers into happy moods. And happy customer is generous with his or
her purse.
5. Music is another thing supermarket use to attract customers and to keep
them in for as long as possible. Most supermarkets have music bars which
9
10
serve two purposes to sell records to customers and to provide a form of
entertainment to customers as they do their shopping. Different types of
music have different effect on different people.
6. Packaging is yet another way in which supermarkets encourage customers to
buy more. Thanks to flexible materials such as plastics, goods can be packed
into all sorts of shapes and sizes. Add attractive colours, labels and lettering
and the customer is hooked
7. Watch out offers. you may not always get best goods at the best prices at a
sale, next time you see labels like “extra”-large” three in one pack” Jumbo-
size and so on. Stop a little and ask yourself.”Do I really need this? And watch
the size of the trolley. That large smooth moving trolley which never seems to
get full may just be the thing to empty your purse. Remember in these hard
times that Supermarkets are out to get your money!
