GEOGRAPHY CHAPTER -2
1. What is population?
Ans- The term ‘population’ refers to all the people who live in a particular
area, city or country.
2. Mention the division of region on the basis of population density?
Ans- Since
the 2001 Census the highest rate of increase in
population density has been observed for the central
northern and eastern regions while lower increases in
population density have been observed for the western,
southern and the north-eastern region.
3.what are the socio-economics factors affecting the distribution of
population?
Ans. The socio-economic factors that influence the population of an area
include transport facilities, development of industries, and level of
urbanization
4.which two factors (rates) help us known the annual growth rate of a
population?
Ans.. The two main factors affecting population growth are the birth rate
(b) and death rate (d) .The birth rate is the number of live births in year
1000 persons. The death rate is the number of death in a year per 1000
persons.Population growth may also be affected by people coming into
the population from somewhere else (immigration) or leaving the
population for another area (emigration)
5.What are the difference between emigration and immigration?.
Ans. Immigration is the process of coming to live permanently in another
country that is not one’s own. Emigration is the process of leaving one
country to go and live permanently in another country.
ANSWER IN DETAILS-
1. Briefly describe the moderately populated regions in the world.
Ans- Moderately Populated region are reasons where the population
density very strong 10 to 50 persons per square kilometre these reasons
are interspersed between densely and sparsely populated regions .
these are the regions where the industrial sector is developing with the
introducing of irrigation facilities or industrial like mining the moderately

populated reason of the world are Central China the plateau region of
India USA etc.
2.What are the impacts of overpopulation on a country.
Ans-. Impact of Overpopulation :
1. Adverse effect on the environment : Higher population
consumes more natural resources like fresh water, arable
land and mineral resources. This leads to deforestation,
scarcity of water, extinction of plants and animals,
depletion of fossil fuels, pollution, global warming.
2. Adverse effect on economy : Higher population leads to
unemployment, overcrowding, shortage of food, fuel,
minerals and other resources. This leads to poor quality of
education, low per capita income, inflation, less
productivity and slow economic growth of the country.
3. Poor quality of life : There is not enough affordable
food, shelter and education. People live in congested
areas with poor sanitary conditions leading to spread of
diseases, poverty and rise in crime rate.
3 How do the geographical factors affect the distribution of
population?
Ans- There are several factors that affect the population distribution in
India:
1. Geographical Factors
2. Social Factors
3. Cultural Factors
4. Economic Factors
1. Geographical factors - People prefer living on plains rather than
plateaus and mountains since these areas are suitable for
agriculture, manufacturing and also service activities.
2. Social: Areas with better housing, health facilities and education
are more populated e.g., Pune. Better transport facilities also
contribute to the increased population of any region.

3. Cultural: Places with cultural or/and religious import attract people.
Example: Varanasi, Jerusalem and Vatican city.
4. Economic: Industrial areas offer employment opportunities. A large
number of people make their way into these areas. Examples:
Mumbai in India and Osaka in Japan.
4 . Why is it important to know the rural-urban composition of a region?
Ans- There is a significant difference in the geographical distribution of the
population in urban and rural areas and it is importance to know the difference
In agricultural countries, the percentage of the rural population is higher, since it is
the rural population that takes part actively in farm-based work. Countries with more
industrial and developed areas have a higher percentage of the urban population.
The rural-urban composition is different in case of developed and developing
countries.
1. In rural areas of developed countries, the number of males is more than the
number of females. It is because the primary sectors are male-dominated in those
countries.
2. Females are more in number in the urban areas of the developed countries. This
is because the females migrate to urban areas for job opportunities, and the males
are engaged in farming activities which are highly mechanized.
5.what is the importance of a population pyramid?
Ans- A population pyramid can be used to compare differences between male and
female populations of an area. They also show the number of dependents (children
and, sometimes, elderly people) and general structure of the population at any given
moment.
The diagram of a population pyramid consists of bars arranged in the form of a
pyramid. The bars show different age groups, with the males on the left and females
on the right. The base represents the youngest age group and the top represents the
oldest. The shape of the population pyramid shows the characteristics of the
population. The three types of pyramid are :
1. Expanding population
2. 2. Constant Population
3. Declining Population
