INTRODUCTION
DOUBLE INSULATION is a concept in safety, in
electric power tools, which eliminates the need for
the usual three wire grounded power cord and
grounded supply system. Wherever there is electric
current in the tool there’ are two complete sets of
insulation to protect the user. All exposed metal
parts are isolated from the internal metal motor
components with proteeting insulation.
GENERAL
Your router is @ versotile woodworking tool which will
give you yeors of trouble-free performance. It is en-
gineered with the professional in mind, but its eose
‘of operation allaws the amateur to produce work which
is beoutiful and precise.
We ask that you toke o few minutes to read the fol-
IMPORTANT—Servicing of a tool with double in-
sulation requires extrome care and knowledge of the
system and should be performed only by a qualified
service technician. For service we suggest you
return the tool to your nearest Sears Store for repair.
Always use original factory replacement parts when
servicing
lowing instructions so you can better enjoy the use of
this new rourer. The booklet Haw To Da More With
Your Power Router” is packed with the tool. This
booklet describes and illustrotes_mony operations
which con be performed with the Croftsman router.
RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION
1, KNOW YOUR POWER TOOL — Read owner's manual carefully. Learn its applications and limitations
as well as the specific potential hazards peculiar to this tool.
2. GROUND ALL TOOLS — UNLESS DOUBLE-INSULATED. If tool is equipped with three-prong
plug, it should be plugged into a three-hole electrical receptacle. If adapter is used to accommodate
two-prong receptacle, the adapter wire must be attached to a known ground. (Usually the screw
securing receptacle cover plate). Never remove third prong.
KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in working order.
KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents
. AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don't use power tool in damp or wet locations or expose to
rain. Keep work area well lit
KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors should be kept safe distance from work area.
STORE IDLE TOOLS. When not in use, tools should be stored in dry, high or locked-up place—out of
reach of children
. DON'T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
USE RIGHT TOOL. Don’t force small tool or attachment to do the job of a heavy duty tool.
WEAR PROPER APPAREL. No loose clothing or jewelry to get caught in moving parts. Rubber gloves
and footwear are recommended when working outdoors.
11. USE SAFETY GLASSES with most tools. Also face or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty.
12. DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool by cord or yank it to disconnect from receptacle. Keep cord
from heat, oil and sharp edges.
18. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work. It's safer than using your hand and it frees both
hands to operate tool
14, DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at ail times.
15. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp at all times, and clean for best and safest per-
formance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
16. DISCONNECT TOOLS. When not in use, before servicing; when changing attachments, blades, bits,
cutters, etc.
17. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit of checking to see that keys and ad-
Jjusting wrenches are removed from tool before turning it on.
18, AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING. Don't carry plugged-in tools with finger on switch. Be sure switch
is off when plugging in.
19, OUTDOOR USE EXTENSION CORDS. When tool is used outdoors, use only extension cords suitable
for use outdoors and so marked

dllow cutter slip easily from collet. Should cut-
fer not slip easily from collet continue loosening
rut until cutter can be removed.
The collet is mochined to precision tolerances to fit
cutters with V2" diomater shank size, Do not tighten
the collet to hold cutters that are undersized. The re-
{ult may be o bent collet which will Pot accept stand-
rd cutters

Periodically check brushes for wear and replace both
brushes when either js worn to about 4 inch in length.
To check length of brushes they must be removed
from the unit. Replacement of these inexpensive ports
when necessary will keep your router operating more
efficiently and prolong the life of the motor.
Replocement of worn-out brushes is considered normal
operating maintenance ond is not covered by guaran-
tee.
1. Disconnect router from power supply
2. Depress switch trigger ond lock it in its “on” posi-
tion.
3. Remove the three screws which secure router end
cop and lift end cap off, See Fig. 3.
4. Unscrew brush cop and remove brush assembly
from its holder.
5. Insert new brush assembly into holder making sure
that the curvature of the brush matches the curva-
ture of the motor to which it fits, and thot it moves
freely in the holder.
6. Replace brush caps, end cap, and screws,
7. Moke sure switch tvigger is in its “off” position
before connecting the toal to power supply
SWITCH REPLACEMENT
Disconnect router from power supply before servicing.
1. Remove end cap os described above.
2. Lift the switch off the twe locating pins and un-
serew the two wire connectors from the switch
wires, See Fig. 4. Note locations of all wiring and
how eoch connection is made to the switch. Con-
nections and wiring position must be identical when
installing the new switch,
3. Connect the wiring to the replacement switch.
Make the connections by holding the two bare
leads side by side and tightening the wire connec-
tor over them
4. Arrange the wiring so thot it will not contact mov-
ing parts of the motor or be pinched when the end
cop is replaced.
5, Ploce the switch in its proper position. Moke sure
switch trigger is depressed ond locked in “on” po-
sition and replace end cop and screws.
6. Make sure switch is off before connecting to power
supply.

GENERAL
Only the parts shown outside Section A an page six
are intended to be reploced by the customer. Ports
listed in Section A represent an importont part of the
double insulation system and should be serviced only
by a quolified service technician
‘Avoid using solvents. when cleaning plastic parts,
‘Most plastics ore susceptible to various types of com-
‘mercial solvents and may be damaged by their use,
Use clean claths to remove dirt, carbon dust, etc.
The clamp bar (Key No. 36 on parts list) assures
smooth elevation of the motor with the motor unit
unclamped in the bose. It is pre-set at the factory to
provide light pressure ogainst the motor housing. The
pressure holds the motor unit in place, unclamped, yet
allows depth adjustments to be made easily.
LUBRICATION—All of the bearings in this tool are
lubricated with a sufficient amount of high grade
lubricant for the life of the unit under normal
operating conditions, therefore, no further
lubrication is required.
When electric tools are used on fiberglass boots,
sports cars, ete. it has been found that they are sub:
ject to accelerated wear and possible premature fail-
Ure, as the fibergloss chips and grindings are highly
abrasive to bearings, brushes, commutotors, etc. C
sequently itis not recommended thot this tool be used
for continuous production work on any fiberglass ma-
terial. During ony use on fiberglass it is extremely
important that the tool is cleaned frequently by blow-
ing with on air jet.
After prolonged use the clamp bar may wear slightly
and allow the motor unit to mave too easily, To adjust
the pressure, loosen the two hex nuts (Key Nos, 35)
and tighten the two set screws (Key Nos. 71). Check
for ease of depth adjustment and tighten the hex nuts.
EXTENSION CORDS
The use of any extension cord will cause some loss of
power. To keep the loss to a minimum and to prevent
tool overheating, follow the recommended cord sizes
‘on the chart ot right. When tao! is used outdoors, use
only extension cords suitoble for outdoor use and so
marked. Extension cords ore available at Sears Cat-
log Order or Retail Stores.
