Before you begin, you need:

Visit https: /learnerregistry.ae.alberta.ca/Home/StartLookup to look up your Alberta
student number, or call an AIT office for your previously assigned ASN.

Email from the individual who will complete the sponsor portion of your application.
NOTE: If this is your sponsor's first online application, your sponsor must validate their email
before you can submit your application.
‘After you enter your sponsor’s email in your application, an email goes automatically to your
sponsor asking for validation.

applying for select Apprenticeship Program.
Complete the required fields and submit.
When you submit your application, your sponsor is
sent an email with instructions to access your
application for confirmation.
8, Once your sponsor confirms your application, they
can pay for it or send it back to you for payment.
Either way, you receive an email notification
providing instructions on proceeding.
9. When the application is paid for, itis submitted to
‘Apprenticeship for review. You can sign into your
MyTradesecrets account to check the status of your
application.
For Sponsors
The applicant needs the email address of an individual
‘who has the authority to act on your organization's behalf
to recommend credit for any previous work experience
and agree to enter into an apprenticeship education
agreement.
‘The following steps should be followed by the sponsor's

1. After an applicant enters the email address provided
by their sponsor in the application, the sponsor
receives an email to validate that the email address is
correct by clicking on Confirm My Email.
2. After the applicant completes the application, the
sponsors notified by an email that includes a link to
‘access the application. When the sponsor clicks the
link, they are directed to the MyAllberta Digital ID
page.

and create a user profile and account, The account

3. When the sponsor is logged in, they are directed to
the sponsor landing page that offers instructions and
access to the application.
4, The sponsor must agree to be a party to the
apprenticeship education agreement to continue.
5. The sponsor must verify the application and agree to
the Terms and Conditions.
6. The applicant may have past work experience they
want to claim. itis atthe sponsor's discretion to
recommend how much relative work experience
should be granted. They must click the Yes button on
the top left, then the Edit button beside the time
credit, then recommend the granting of the
appropriate hours from the drop down menu when it
appears.
NOTE: All apprentices must complete a minimum of one
year of months and hours regardless of how much work
experience they have.
7. Confirm and submit as required,

application. If they choose Yes, it will refer them to
Payment Options and the application is submitted. If
they choose No, the applicant receives an email
instructing him/her to choose a payment option and
the application is then submitted

Financial Assistance for Apprentices
Scholarships
More than 900 scholarships are available to
apprentices every year.

Pre-apprentice Scholarships
$1,000 scholarships are available annually to
encourage students completing pre-apprenticeship
{raining to continue in the trades and complete their
programs.
High School Apprenticeship Scholarships
Valued at $1,000 or $2,000, these scholarships
recognize the accomplishments of high school
students participating in the Registered
Apprenticeship Program and/or Career and
Technology Studies apprenticeship pathways.
Apprentice Scholarships
‘$1,000 scholarships are available annually,
recognizing the excellence of Alberta apprentices in a
designated trade and encouraging recipients to
complete their apprenticeship programs.
Apprentice Training Award
‘A $1,500 financial award is available for registered
apprentices who are “Unemployed in the Trade” and
attending second, third or fourth period classroom
instruction at an Alberta-approved classroom
instruction provider.

Employment Insurance
During periods of classroom instruction, apprentices,
are able to claim Employment insurance (El). To be
considered eligible, apprentices should apply online
through Service Canada as soon as they stop
working.

Alberta Student Loans and Grants
Alberta Student Aid provides loans and grants to
apprentices registered in the Alberta apprenticeship
program and attending an approved classroom
instruction period as a full-time student.

Canadian Apprentice Loan
Up to $4,000 is a ible in interest-free loans per

Government of Canada for apprentices in the
designated Red Seal trades.

Federal Apprenticeship Grants
Canada Apprenticeship Incentive Grant
Taxable cash grant of $1,000 (lifetime maximum of
$2,000 per person) for apprentices who successfully
complete the first and/or second year of classroom
instruction in a designated Red Seal trade.
Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women
‘Taxable cash grant of $3,000 per year (up to a
maximum amount of $6,000) for apprentices who
successfully complete their first and/or second year
of a Red Seal trade apprenticeship program. Tris

Deduction

the appropriate trade. Refer to the lst of trades and
‘occupations on tradesecrets.alberta.ca to help you
choose the correct trade. For example, the Heavy
Equipment Technician trade includes Truck and
Transport Mechanic, and Off-Road. To apply for of
road equipment, solect Heavy Equipment Technician
= Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic (Off Road).
8. When asked which program or service you are
applying for, select Programs for Experienced
Workers.

letters from employers and contract information.
20. Read the information on the Declaration,
Agreements and Consents screens. If you agree
with and understand the statements, click on the
appropriate boxes.
21. You willbe asked for your method of payment forthe
application. You may pay online by credit card or
‘submit your application and go to an AIT office to pay.
‘All applications have a lifespan of 75 days. Fan
application is not completed within this time frame,
it will be cancelled and you must start again.

A Sponsor's Guide to Apprenticeship
Who can be a sponsor?
‘Any legal entity recognized in Alberta that is able to meet
the obligations of a sponsor can sponsor an apprentice,
‘Assponsor may be an employer, a consortium of
‘employers, a labour organization, a non-profit
organization, or more!
What does it mean to be a sponsor?
‘Sponsors support apprenticeship education
programs by allowing apprentices to develop their
skills through paid, on-the-job experience and
‘The Apprenticeship Education and Industry Training
Program Regulation identifies sponsor responsibilities
‘and obligations. This includes:
+ ensuring the apprentice is placed in appropriate job to
receive the required on-the-job instruction,
+ encouraging and enabling the apprentice to attend
their required classroom instruction,
‘= ensuring the apprentice progresses through the
apprenticeship program, and
‘= ensuring that a mentor is available and able to mentor,
the apprentice.
Mentors are supervising tradespersons who provide
apprentices with on-the-job instruction and
‘guidance. Effective mentorship includes:
+ providing apprentices with information, knowledge,
‘guidance, and opportunties to develop their skilsets,
+ providing apprentices with opportunities to integrate
their on-the-job experiences and skils with classroom
knowledge,
+ providing continual support, monitoring, and feedback
to ald the apprentice's development, and
+ assessing apprentices’ competencies gained from on-
the-job training activities, integrating knowledge and
skil learned through classroom instruction.

Four steps to sponsoring an apprentice
1. Learn about which trade and associated
apprenticeship program makes sense for your

If your employee is not a registered apprentice, ask them

sponsorship of the apprentice and enter into an
Apprenticeship Education Agreement.

complete and sign a Notice of Acceptance form to
register your sponsorship of the apprentice.

period, or call the AIT Information Line at 1-800-248-
4823 if they have questions about the status of their
apprenticeship.
3. Provide your apprentice with opportunities to
develop their skills through paid, on-the-job instruction
under the mentorship of a certified journeyperson and in
accordance with the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship
Education Act
