What is an IATA three-letter airport code?

United States airports, as well as airports around the world use a universal unique three-letter airport code
code, or
Location Identifier defined by the International Air Transport Association. It's easier to say, and write LAX than
Los Angeles International Airport for the pilots, controllers, travel agents, frequent flyers, computers and
baggage handlers. It's the three-letter code you see on baggage tags in the airport.

Are there four-character codes?

The ICAO airport code is a four-character alphanumeric code used to designate all airport around the world as
defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization. ICAO codes di!er from the IATA codes used for
reservations and baggage, as they are used by air tra"c control for flight planning and airline operations, and are
not included in this list.
