MODULE OUTLINE
Module objectives
The objective of the module is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the values, ethics
and principles of the social work profession. To provide students with core competencies in the social
work profession, that is the competency to apply social work values and ethics in building professional
relationship; social work ethics in gathering clients’ information and social work values and ethics in
managing relationship with clients.
Expected Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this module, students are expected to have gained understanding and
knowledge of the values, ethics and principles of the social work profession; Demonstrate work values
and ethics in building professional relationship; social work ethics in gathering clients’ information and
social work values and ethics in managing relationship with clients.
Module Description
The module covers basic content of values, ethics and principles of the social work profession; ethics in
building professional relationship; gathering clients’ information and ethics in managing relationship with
clients.
Delivery Mode: lecture and seminars
Assessment: The continuous assessment (CA)counts for 60% of the final grade and the final examination
counts the other 40%. Students will be required to sit for 2 tests in class (30 marks), write 1 project paper
(10marks) and present a seminar paper (10 marks) and quizzes (5 marks). Students will be expected to be
prepared for the seminar topic of the day and will demonstrate knowledge of the subject by participating
in class discussion (5 marks). At the end of the semester students will be required to sit for an
examination.

Topic 2: Demonstration of social work values and ethics in building professional Relationship
Define the term professional relationship
Differentiate between professional relationship and other relationships
Demonstrate social work skills in building professional relationship
Topic 3: Demonstration of social work ethics in gathering clients’ information
Explain the social work code of ethics
Explain the importance of social work code of ethics
Demonstrate social work code of conduct in gathering clients’ information
Demonstrate responsibility to clients in gathering information
Demonstrate responsibility to colleagues in gathering information
Topic 4: Social work values applied in providing psychosocial support to clients and managing
relationship with clients

Explain terms used in managing clients (PLHIV and AIDS and related Family members,
relatives, People with other chronic disease
Explain the concepts of social work ethics in managing clients
