Call off
Definition: To cancel something that was previously planned.
Example: They had to call off the picnic because of the bad weather.
· Take off
Definition: To remove something, or to become airborne (in the context
of planes).
Example 1: She took off her coat when she entered the warm house.
Example 2: The plane will take off in ten minutes.
· Turn off
Definition: To switch something off, or to cause someone to lose interest
or enthusiasm.
Example 1: Please remember to turn off the lights when you leave the
room.
Example 2: The boring lecture turned off most of the audience.
· Call in
Definition: To request someone to come to a particular place or situation,
or to make a brief visit.
Example: They had to call in a plumber to fix the leaky faucet.
· Fill in
Definition: To provide information or details, or to temporarily do someone
else's work or duties.
Example 1: Can you fill in this form with your personal details?
Example 2: I need you to fill in for me while I'm on vacation.
· Sell out
Definition: To completely sell all available tickets, seats, or stock.
Example: The concert sold out within minutes of tickets going on sale.
· Break down
Definition: To stop working (in the context of machinery or systems), or to
become emotionally upset.
Example 1: My car broke down on the highway, and I had to call a tow
truck.
Example 2: After the bad news, she broke down and cried.
· Stand up
Definition: To rise to a standing position, or to fail to meet someone for a
planned meeting or date.
Example 1: Please stand up and introduce yourself to the class.
Example 2: He stood her up on their anniversary dinner.
· Turn down
Definition: To reduce the volume or intensity of something, or to reject an
offer or request.
Example 1: Can you turn down the radio? It's too loud.
Example 2: Unfortunately, they turned down my job application.
· Check off
Definition: To mark something as completed or verified on a list.
Example: I'll check off each item on the list as we finish them.
· Let on
Definition: To reveal or disclose something that was previously hidden or
secret.
Example: She didn't let on that she knew about the surprise party.
· Get around
Definition: To find a way to avoid something, or to spread or circulate
(information).
Example 1: We need to find a way to get around the traffic jam.
Example 2: Rumors about the scandal quickly got around the office.
· Pass out
Definition: To lose consciousness, or to distribute something to a group
of people.
Example 1: He passed out after running the marathon.
Example 2: Can you pass out the worksheets to the students?
· Break into
Definition: To forcefully enter a building or area, or to begin something
suddenly (like laughter or applause).
Example 1: Someone broke into our house while we were on vacation.
Example 2: The audience broke into applause after the performance.
· Go along
Definition: To agree or comply with something, or to accompany
someone.
Example 1: She decided to go along with the plan.
Example 2: Can I go along with you to the store?
· Carry on
Definition: To continue doing something, or to behave in a particular way.
Example 1: Despite the difficulties, they decided to carry on with the
project.
Example 2: Please carry on with your work while I'm away.
· Bring back
Definition: To return something to its previous place or condition, or to
cause someone to remember something.
Example 1: Can you bring back the book you borrowed?
Example 2: That song brings back memories of my childhood.
· Back out
Definition: To withdraw from an agreement or commitment, or to move
backwards out of a space.
Example 1: He backed out of the deal at the last minute.
Example 2: Be careful not to back out into oncoming traffic.
