Unit 1: Introduction & Basic Models
Lesson 1: Revit Introduction
Make a new project
Open up Revit
Under “project” select “New”
In the “New Project” window click the “OK” button
Click and choose between 'imperial' or 'metric' (Example: imperial)
Review User Interface
Lesson 2: Basic Design Objects
Add a wall to your model
Navigate to the architecture tab and Click “Wall'
(Note: green hue conveys you are in creation
mode)
Left click on the white modeling screen
Drag and click to place a wall
Continuing dragging a clicking to make walls until you click and connect to the first wall
(Note: hit escape to exit creation mode)
Modify the parameters of a wall by clicking on the wall and changing the dimension
Add a door
Navigate to the architecture tab and click “Door”
Click “Yes” to downloading family
Click on the "Doors" folder
Select the type of door you wish to add to your model and click the "Open" button
Click on a location of a wall within your model to place a door.
Modify the parameters of the door by clicking on the door and entering dimension
(Note: You can change dimensions and the way the door swings)
Add a window
Navigate to the Architecture tab, Click “Window”
Click “Yes” to downloading family
Click on the "Windows" folder and click the "Open" button
Select the type of window you wish to add to your model and click the "Open" button
Click on a location of a wall to place a window.
Modify the parameters of the window by clicking on the window and changing dimensions
(Note: You can change dimensions and window orientation)
Lesson 3: Setting up Views
Create an elevated view
Make sure the 'properties' window and the 'project browser' window are open.
Navigate to the 'Project Browser' window
click on 'views (all)' to expand the view
Navigate to the 'view tab' and select "Elevation"
Create an elevated view of your building by positioning the elevation icon to point at your
building then click
(Note: To get out of command/creation mode hit 'escape')

View the elevation just created by navigating to the 'Project Browser' window, then locate and
double click on the elevation view.
Adjust the surrounding box to widen your view to see the whole model
(Note: In the 'properties' window you can change parameters of windows and walls of the model)
(Note: To undo, hit “Ctrl” and “Z”)
Add a second level
Navigate to the 'architecture tab' and click “Level”
Click to define a height and to create a starting point. Then drag across your model and click to
create a second level.
Hit “Esc” to exit creation mode
Select a wall, right click, and a menu appears
Within the menu navigate to “Select All Instances” then select “In Entire Project”
Navigate to the “Properties” Window
Define “Top Constraint” by clicking on the drop down arrow and selecting "Up to level: Level 2"
(Note: Remember to frequently save your project to not lose progress)

Lesson 4: Detailed Design Objects
Add and manipulate flooring
In the “Project Browser” navigate to “Floor Plans” and select “Level1”
Navigate to the “Architecture” tab and select "Floor"
Define the edge of the floor by selecting walls in the model
(Note: Magenta lines appear along the walls selected)
Click the Check Mark box to create floor
(Note: hit 'escape' to exit creation mode)
In the Project Browser' window and select “Elevation” view.
Click on the Floor in the model
Navigate to “Mode” and click on “Edit Boundary”
Select “Floor Plan: Level 1” and click the “Open View” button
Click and drag a floor boundaries to where you want them
Click the Check Mark box to create floor
Create new floor by going to “Architecture” tab and clicking “Floor”
Create boundaries for the floor by dragging the boundary lines to where you want them
Click the Check Mark to create floor
In the “Project Browser” navigate to “Elevation” view
Add and manipulate floor types
Use 3D view
In the “Project Browser” window navigate to “Floor Plans” and select “Level 1”
Navigate to “View” tab and click on “3D View”
(Note: Top right has a 'View Cube' with Standard Views. Or hold 'shift' and use the middle wheel on
your mouse to orbit around the model)
Create a roof
Navigate to “Architecture” tab and click “Roof”
In the popup window that appears, select “Level 2” then click the “Yes” button.
In the “Project Browser” window navigate to "Floor Plans" and select “Level 2”
Define edges of the roof.
Click the Check Mark box
Navigate to “View' tab” and select "3D view"
Navigate to “Mode” and click on 'Edit Footprint'
Right click on a magenta perimeter line. A menu appears.
In the Menu, select "Toggle Slope Defining"
Repeat for all sides of the roof you wish to have a pitch
Click the Check Mark box to create roof
Attach a wall to the roof by clicking on the wall, select “Attach Top/Base,” and then click on the
roof of the model.
Lesson 5: Elements
Add elements
In the “Project Browser” navigate to “floor plans” then select “level 1”
In the “Architecture” tab and select “Component”
Click on "Load Family"

Click on the “Furniture” folder, then “Seating” folder, then select 'Sofa.'
Click the "Open" button.
Click and drag the sofa to where you want it to be placed.
(Note: when the element is selected, clicking 'space bar' will rotate the object.
Or, rotate by navigating to “Modify” and selecting the rotate command)
Navigate to “Architecture” tab and select “Component”
Navigate to “Mode” then click on "Load Family"
Select "Furniture" folder, then "Tables' folder, and choose a table you would like to add to your
model.

Lesson 6: Basic Drawing Elements
Create a drawing sheet
Go to 3D view of (>"Project Browser' >Views>3D views >(3D))
In the “Project Browser” window, find “Sheets (all)” and right click. A menu appears
In the menu, select 'New Sheet…"
The "New Sheet" window will appear. Click the "OK" button
In the "Project Browser' window navigate to “Floor Plans” and click "level 1" once
Drag “level 1” into your workspace
Zoom in until you see your plan view of the space
In the 'Properties' window you can change 'View scale'
Click and drag “Elevation” onto the sheet
Create a section view
Double click on “Level 1” plan
Navigate to “View” tab and select "Section"
Click and drag a line to cut a view
Determine the direction you want to view the cut section by grabbing and dragging the square
In the "Project Browser" window navigate to "Sections" then select "Section 1" by double
clicking
In the “Project Browser” window select your sheet
Click and drag 'section 1' onto the sheet.
Create title block Sheet
Navigate to "Sheet composition" and select "title block"
Click on the "title block" folder
Select a sheet size
Click the 'Open' button
Click and place title block on the sheet.
In the 'Properties' window, modify model views to fit in the title block sheet.

Edit sheet
Lesson 7: Key Drawing Concepts
Parameters can be changed by clicking on the model and editing them in the
“Properties” window or in the drawing area
(Note: Revit defines items by parameters so when a perimeter is changed in one view, Revit
automatically changes that perimeter in all other views)

Lesson 8: Set up the Takeoff
Produce a door takeoff schedule
Navigate to the "view” tab and select "Schedules"
In the drop down menu select "Schedule/Quantities"
In the " New Schedule" window" navigate to "Category:" and select "Doors"
Under "Name:" rename the schedule
Click “Ok”. The "Schedule Properties" dialog box appears
Select items from the "Available fields" list and add them to the "Scheduled fields (in order):" list
(Add "level", "Family and Type,” and “count")
(Note: This is done by clicking on an item then clicking the "add" button)
Click on "Filter" tab
For "Filter by:" select “Level", then specify floor
Go to the "Sorting/Grouping" tab
For "Sort by:" select "Family and Type"
Uncheck "Itemize every instance"
Click "OK" button
The schedule just created can is found in the "Project Browser" window under
'Schedules/Quantities'
In the "Properties" window you can modify the schedule
Wall material takeoff
Navigate to "view” tab and select "Schedules"
In the drop down menu select "Material Takeoff."
In the "New Material Takeoff" dialog box, navigate to "Category:" and select "Walls"
Click "OK." The "Schedule Properties" dialog box appears.
Select items for the "Available fields" list and add them to the "Scheduled fields (in order):" list.
(Add "Material: Name," "Type," "Length," "Material: Area," and "MaterialVolume")
(Note: This is done by clicking on an item then clicking the "add" button)
Go to "Filter" tab
For "Filter by:" select "Material: Name" and "equals" and "Finishes - Interior - Gypsum Wall
Board"
Go to "Sorting/Grouping" tab
For "Sort by:" select "Type"
Check "Grand totals:"
Go to the "Formatting" tab
For "Fields:" select "Material: Area"
Check "Calculate totals"
Also "Material Volume" and check "Calculate totals"
Click "OK"
In the "Properties" window, you can modify the schedule
Window takeoff schedule
Navigate to "View” tab and click on “Schedules”
In the drop down menu select "Schedule/Quantities"
A " New Schedule" window" appears
For "Category:" select "Windows"

Under "Name:" rename the schedule.
Click “Ok.” The "Schedule Properties" Dialog box appears.
In the "Available fields" list, select and add fields to the "Scheduled fields (in order):" list.
(Add "Family and Type", "Level," "Sill Height," and "Count")
(Note: This is done by clicking on a field then clicking the “Add” button)
Go to the "Filter" tab
For "Filter by:" select Level, then specify floor
Add another filter for "And:" selecting "Sill Height," "equals," and "4'"
Go to the "Sorting/Grouping" tab
For "Sort by:" select "Family and Type"
Go to "Formatting" tab and select "Fields:" then "Count"
Click "Grand Totals"
Click "OK" button
In the "Properties" window, you can modify the schedule
Lesson 9: Model Visualization
Export schedule to Excel
In the "Project Browser" window select a schedule by double clicking (Example "Third Floor Door
Takeoff")
Navigate to the "Revit" button at the top
In the drop down menu, select "Export" then "Reports" then "Schedule"
Choose location to save schedule.
Click "Save." An "Export Schedule" dialog box appears.
Click "OK"
Open saved file
Open Excel
In the drop down menu in Excel, select "Open"
Change "All Excel Files" to "All Files"
Select your saved file and click "Open"
In the "Text Import Wizard" window click "Next" then "Next" then "finish"
Modify Excel file
