Safe Work Procedure
Laser cutter
DO NOT use this machine unless you have been instructed in its safe use and
have been given permission
Safety glasses must be worn at all times Long and loose hair must be contained
in work areas. or restrained.
Appropriate protective footwear with Close fitting, protective clothing or a
substantial uppers must be worn. workshop apron is encouraged.
Only Class 1 or 2 lasers are to be used
within a school.
Only ONE person may operate this machine at any one time
POTENTIAL HAZARDS
• Impact, pinch and crush points
• CO2 laser beam
• Flammable materials
• Noxious or toxic gases and fumes
• Hot material
• Lifting material in and out of the machine
PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS
1. Ensure that materials and coating to be cut contain no hazard. Consult the manufacturers’ SDS.
2. Check nozzle has no build-up of material on it. Clear all waste / off cuts from laser grid and table.
3. Safety guarding and lockout devices must never be removed or adjusted.
4. It is mandatory that an exhaust extraction system is attached and switched on.
5. Visually check the area to ensure no slip or trip hazards are present in this workspace.
6. Ensure the air assist is switched on.
7. Where appropriate ensure the water chiller is switched on.
8. Ensure a CO2 fire extinguisher is within easy reach.
OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS
1. Only trained and competent staff and students should be setting up and operating the laser cutter.
2. Always monitor the materials being cut during laser operation.
3. Ensure the lid is closed whilst the laser cutter is in use.
4. Ensure air assist is operating.
5. Only cut materials recommended by the manufacturer of the machine.
6. Follow manufacturers servicing schedules.
7. Before operation check the grid and table tray are free of off cuts / waste.
DO NOT
• Never leave the laser cutter unsupervised when in operation due to fire risk.
• Never open the lid whilst the laser cutter is in use.
