Q. No. 21 to 26 are Very Short Answer Questions.

21. State whether the given chemical reaction is a redox reaction or not. Justify your
answer. 2

MnO2 + 4HCl → MnCl2 + 2H2O + Cl2

Yes, the given reaction is a redox reaction.

Justification:

• In MnO2 , manganese (Mn) has an oxidation state of +4.

• In MnCl2 , manganese (Mn) has an oxidation state of +2.

• In HCl, chlorine (Cl) has an oxidation state of -1.

• In Cl2 , chlorine (Cl) has an oxidation state of 0.

Oxidation State Changes:

• Manganese (Mn) is reduced from +4 to +2 (gain of electrons).

• Chlorine (Cl) is oxidized from -1 to 0 (loss of electrons).

Class X Science [Link] 10

Since there is both oxidation and reduction occurring, it confirms that the reaction is a redox
reaction.

23. Give the name of the enzyme present in the fluid in our mouth cavity. State the
gland which produces it. What would happen to the digestion process if this gland stops
secreting this enzyme? 2

• Enzyme Name: Salivary amylase.

• Gland: Salivary glands.

• Effect on Digestion: If the salivary glands stop secreting salivary amylase, the
digestion of starch in the mouth would be affected. This would slow down the initial
stage of carbohydrate digestion.

24. Let the resistance of an electrical device remain constant, while the potential
difference across its two ends decreases to one fourth of its initial value. What change
will occur in the current through it? State the law which helps us in solving the above-

Class X Science [Link] 19

(iii) Reflex arcs have evolved in animals. Why?

• Reflex arcs have evolved to enable quick responses to stimuli without the delay of
routing signals through the brain.

• This helps in protecting the body from immediate harm and allows for faster reaction
times in dangerous situations.

30. With the help of an appropriate example, justify that some of the chemical reactions
are determined by 3

(a) Change in temperature,

• Example: Decomposition of calcium carbonate.

CaCO3 ⎯⎯ → CaO + CO2

When calcium carbonate is heated, it decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon
dioxide gas. This reaction is endothermic and requires a change in temperature.

KMnO4 + C3H8O3 → MnO2 + CO2 + H2O

Potassium permanganate is purple in colour, and it changes to brown manganese

dioxide during the reaction, indicating a change in colour.

31. State reasons for Myopia. With the help of ray diagrams, show the 3

(a) image formation by a myopic eye, and

• Reason for Myopia: Myopia or nearsightedness occurs when the eyeball is too long
or the cornea is too curved. This causes light rays to focus at a point in front of the
retina instead of directly on its surface.

(b) correction of myopia using an appropriate lens.

• Correction: Myopia can be corrected using concave lenses, which diverge the light
rays before they enter the eye, ensuring that the image is focused on the retina.

33. (a) Write the percentage of (i) solar energy captured by the autotrophs and (ii)
energy transferred from autotrophs to the next level in a food chain. 3

• (i) Solar energy captured by autotrophs: Approximately 1% of the solar energy that
reaches the Earth’s surface is captured by autotrophs through photosynthesis.

• (ii) Energy transferred from autotrophs to the next level: About 10% of the energy
captured by autotrophs is transferred to the next trophic level in a food chain.

(b) What are trophic levels? Why do different food chains in an ecosystem not have
more than four to five trophic levels? Give reason.

• Trophic Levels: Trophic levels represent the different levels in a food chain where
organisms obtain their energy. The primary producers (autotrophs) form the first
level, herbivores (primary consumers) form the second, and so on.

• Reason for Limited Trophic Levels: Most ecosystems do not have more than four to
five trophic levels because energy transfer between levels is inefficient. Only about
10% of energy is transferred from one level to the next, leading to significant energy
loss at each step. This limits the number of trophic levels that can be supported.

35. Give reason for the following: 5

(a) During reproduction inheritance of different proteins will lead to altered body
designs.

• Reason: Different proteins coded by different genes can result in varied body
structures and functions due to the specific roles that proteins play in growth and
development.

(b) Fertilization cannot take place in flowers if pollination does not occur.

• Reason: Pollination is the process of transferring pollen grains from the male anther
to the female stigma. Without pollination, fertilization cannot occur as the male
gametes will not reach the female gametes.

(c) All multicellular organisms cannot give rise to new individuals through
fragmentation or regeneration.

• Reason: Fragmentation and regeneration are simple asexual reproduction methods

that only some organisms, like certain invertebrates (e.g., starfish) and plants (e.g.,
algae), can perform. Most multicellular organisms require more complex reproductive
processes, such as sexual reproduction, to produce new individuals due to their more
complex body structures and specialized cells.

(d) Vegetative propagation is practised for growing only some types of plants.

• Reason: Vegetative propagation is a form of asexual reproduction used to grow plants

that can reproduce from vegetative parts like stems, roots, or leaves. This method is
effective for plants that do not produce viable seeds, have desirable traits that need to
be preserved, or for crops that require rapid multiplication.

Class X Science [Link] 26

(e) The parents and off-springs of organisms reproducing sexually have the same
number of chromosomes.

• Reason: In sexual reproduction, each parent contributes half of their chromosomes to

the offspring through gametes (sperm and egg). The fusion of these gametes during
fertilization restores the full number of chromosomes in the offspring, ensuring they
have the same total number of chromosomes as the parents. This maintains genetic
continuity across generations.

36. (a) (i) What is meant by resistance of a conductor? Define its SI unit. 5

• Resistance: Resistance is the property of a conductor that opposes the flow of electric
current through it.

• SI Unit: The SI unit of resistance is the ohm (Ω).

(ii) List two factors on which the resistance of a rectangular conductor depends.

1. Length of the conductor (L): Resistance is directly proportional to the length of the
conductor.

2. Cross-sectional area (A): Resistance is inversely proportional to the cross-sectional

area of the conductor.

(iii) How will the resistance of a wire be affected if its

1. Length is doubled, and

o Justification: If the length of the wire is doubled, the resistance will also
double because resistance is directly proportional to length.

Class X Science [Link] 27

R∝L ⟹ R′=2R

2. Radius is also doubled.

o Justification: If the radius of the wire is doubled, the cross-sectional area will
increase by a factor of four (since area A∝r2A \propto r^2A∝r2), and
resistance will decrease by a factor of four because resistance is inversely
proportional to the cross-sectional area.

(b) In an electric circuit three bulbs of 100 W each are connected in series to a source.
In another circuit, three bulbs of the same wattage are connected in parallel to the same
source. 5

(i) Will the bulb in the two circuits glow with the same brightness? Justify your answer.

• Series Circuit: In a series circuit, the same current flows through all the bulbs. Since
the voltage is divided among the bulbs, each bulb will receive less voltage and hence
will glow dimmer.

• Parallel Circuit: In a parallel circuit, each bulb receives the full voltage of the
source. Therefore, each bulb will glow with its full brightness.

(ii) Now, let one bulb in both the circuits get fused. Will the rest of the bulbs continue to
glow in each circuit? Give reason for your answer.

• Series Circuit: If one bulb fuses in a series circuit, the entire circuit is broken, and
none of the bulbs will glow.

1. The image is real and inverted.

2. The image is smaller than the object (diminished).

(b) In which one of the cases given in the table, the mirror will form a real image of
same size and why?

• Answer: In Case II, the object is placed at twice the focal length (2f). When an object
is placed at 2f in front of a concave mirror, a real, inverted image of the same size is
formed at 2f on the other side.

(c) Name the type of mirror used by dentists. Give reason why they use such type of
mirrors.

• Answer: Dentists use concave mirrors. They use them because concave mirrors can
form a magnified image of the teeth, which helps in better examination and diagnosis.

Look at the table and identify the situation (object distance and focal length) which
resembles the situation in which concave mirrors are used as shaving mirrors. Draw a
ray diagram to show the image formation in this case.

• Answer: Case III resembles the situation of a shaving mirror. In this case, the object
is placed within the focal length of the concave mirror, which forms a virtual, erect,
and magnified image.
