Why are road signs important?

The importance of road signs is to provide information for drivers and other road users. They

represent rules that are put in place to safe keep you and others. It also gives an important

message to drivers and pedestrians that can help in the reduction of accidents. Ignoring the road

signs can be dangerous and deadly. Most signs use pictures rather than words as it can be more

understanding.

10 Road signs that are used in Trinidad and Tobago
roadways.

Slippery Road – Road maybe smooth or wet and can cause slips, which may cause accidents.

Pedestrians Crossing – Frequent crossing of people at this part of the road. It may not have a
traffic light.

Roads Work- Ministry of Works and Transport may have frequent road works in that area.
Two Way Traffic- It is a warning sign. Two way traffic signs are posted before or on two-
way roadways. These two way traffic signs warn drivers that they're leaving a one-way roadway
and entering a roadway with opposing traffic.

Merging Traffic -the merge sign is a regulatory sign. Drivers who encounter a merge sign
are warned that two separate roadways will converge into one lane ahead.

No Left Turn - Regulation signs with a red circle and slash indicate that you are prohibited from taking the
designated action. The no left turn sign is a turn prohibition sign that is designed to prevent an accident from
occurring by informing drivers that turning left is prohibited.
No right turn- Do not make a right turn at an intersection marked by the "NO RIGHT TURN"
sign. You can either travel straight through the intersection or turn left.

Stop Sign - A stop sign is a traffic sign designed to notify drivers that they must come to a
complete stop and make sure the intersection is safely clear of vehicles and pedestrians before
continuing past the sign

No overtaking – This sign prohibits overtaking of other vehicles, maybe due to a bend, slop
or hill in the road.

Maximum Speed limit in km/h- You must not exceed a speed of 50 miles per hour, often on
urban dual carriageways and some outer roads of towns and cities. A speed limit is the limit of
speed allowed by law for road vehicles.
The effects of the effective road signs:

When a road sign is made with durable material, correct colour, proper size and visible day and
night it can be seen an effective sign

o The road signs help the driver to know where they are going and help with the proper
flow of traffic.

o The sign qualities are reflective when a vehicle light hits it during the night.

o Most signs use pictures rather than words as it can be more understanding.

o They represent rules that are put in place to safe keep you and others.

o It also gives an important message to drivers and pedestrians that can help in the

reduction of accidents, this being the most important reason for an effective road

sign.
The effects of the ineffective road signs

Small signs, poorly lit signs, improperly positioned signs, and other issues

can cause drivers to miss the signs they need to follow to avoid an accident.

Whether the sign is on a busy highway, a quiet street, or in a small

neighbourhood, it is a recipe for disaster. When poor signage causes an

accident, the government entities responsible for installing and maintaining

these signs can be held accountable for their negligence

Inadequate signage may put a pedestrian at risk of injury and other users of

roadway. .

Improper placement of signage at construction sites may obstruct a driver’s

view or not allow drivers enough time to react during times of congestion.

If the sign is not visible at night, it will be ineffective and pose dangerous

conditions.
