Activity 10
Topic
Angles subtended by an arc of a circle at its centre and at any point on
part of the circle
Objective
Materials required remaining
(i) Chart paper, tracing Paper
To verify that the angle subtended by coloured glazed papers and
an arc of a circle at the centre is double
(ii) Geometry box
the angle subtended by it at any point
on the remaining part of the circle. (iii) Coloured ball point pens/paint boy
(iv) Pair of scissors
To perform the activity (v) Fevistick/gum.
Procedure
1. Draw a circle of any radius with centre O on a chart paper as shown in fig. 101
2. Let AB be any arcof the circle and C be any point on the remaining part of the
circle. Colour the arc AB red.
3. Join OA, OB, AC and BC. Then ZAOB and ZACB are the angles subtended by the
arc AB of the circle at its centre O and at any point C on the remaining part of the
circle respectively. Paint ZACB green and ZAOB yellow as shown in fig. 10.1.
4. Make a replica of ZACB from a tracing paper and use it to make two replicas
of ZACB on green coloured glazed papers as shown in fig. 10.2.
5. Paste the two green coloured glazed paper replicas of ZACB adjacent to eah
other on ZAOB as shown in fig. 10.3.
Result
We observe that the two green coloured paper replicas of ZACB exactly cover ZAUD
Hence, the angle subtended by an arc of acircle at the centre is double the any
subtended by it at any pointon the remaining part of the circle.
Remark
The students should perform the activity for the cases where the arc ABis
a semicircular arc or a major arc.

Remerk
The above model can be used to demonstrate that "an exterior angle of a
cyclic quadrilateral is equal to the interior opposite angle".
To see this
Extend one of its sides, say AB, to the point E to make an exterior ZCBE as shown in
fig. 13.4.
Take the cut out of ZD and paste it on ZCBE as shown in fig. 13.4.
Result
We observe that the cut out of Dexactly COvers ZCBE.
Thus an exterior angle of a cyclic quadrilateral is equal to the interior opposite angle.
Learning outcomes
t Students learn that the sum of either pair of opposite angles of a cyclic
quadrilateral is 180°.
* Students learn that in a cycicquadrilateral, an exterior angle is equal tothe
opposite interior angle.
