pastime was standing on the doorway of her house and
watching the activities of outside. But the sight of bus
which passed through her street was more fascinating
to her.
Q.2 Who was Valli?
Ans. Valli was a girl of eight years and she was very
curious about to know about the things. She was very
bold, smart and wise beyond her age.
Q.3 What does Valli mean when she say “ I was just
agreeing with what you said about things happening
without our knowledge”.
Ans. When Valli’s mother was talking to her aunt that
one couldn’t be aware of everything happening in the
world outside, Valli poked into their discussion by
saying “Oh, yes!” She was smiling herself as She had a
ride on bus without her mother’s knowledge.
Q.4 Why does the conductor refer to Valli as madam
in the story?
Ans. The conductor is a jolly kind of person. He calls Valli
as 'Madam' because she behaves like a matured
woman though she was only eight years old. She is
bold, wise and confident beyond her age. Her attitude is
not less than some grown up madam.
Q.5 How can you say that Valli enjoyed the bus ride?
Ans. Valli’s deepest desire was to go on a bus ride. When
she entered the bus, she started devouring everything
with her eyes. It was a new bus with a very beautiful
clock. She stood up on the seat and was peering over
the blind to see outside the window. She was happy to
see grasslands, mountains, a canal and blue sky. She
clapped with a glee when she saw a young cow running
in front of the bus.
Q.6 How did Valli plan her bus ride? What did she find
out about the bus, and how did she save up the fare?
Ans. Valli was a very meticulous planner. Her mother
would take a nap in afternoon and Valli found this time
very suitable for her bus ride
She collected all the information about the bus ride by
observing passengers and asking questions to some of
her relatives and neighbours. She found that the town
was six miles away and the fare was 30 paise for one
way.
She planned to take the bus of 1one O’clock and it
would take 45 minutes to her to reach the town. If she
remained on her seat , She could return by two forty-
five after the halting period of fifteen minutes.
It took her about two months to save money . It was
very difficult for her to resist the temptation to buy
peppermints, toys, balloons and a ride on merry -go-
round.
Q.7 Write down the character sketch of Valli.
Ans. Valli was an eight years village girl. She was far
mature, confident, and determined than her age. She
was very curious by nature. She was a keen observer.
As she had no play mates of her own age, she would
stand at the entrance of her house and watch the
things happening outside. It was her favourite pastime.
She observed everything very carefully and satisfied
her curiosity. She saw a bus which passed through her
street and every time it was full of different set of
passengers. Gradually , she developed a deep desire to
ride the bus. She noticed minor and minutes things like
how the passengers boarded and deboarded the bus.
She enquired some passengers about the fare also. She
came to learn that the city was six miles away from her
village and it took forty-five minutes for one way
journey. She also knew that the bus halted for fifteen
minutes in the city.
She was a very meticulous planner. She planned her
bus ride very wisely. She needed sixty paise for the bus
ride.

When she reached the city, she did not get off the bus
because she was afraid of losing. She showed maturity
and denied the treat of juice offered by the conductor.
When she was coming back, she noticed that the young
cow was lying dead in the middle of the road. It
dampened her spirit. She became sad. She was trying
to understand the mystery of life and death.
Thus, we find Valli a very wise, bold, mature and
confident girl. But yet, it is not safe for a child to travel
alone . Her mother gives an impression of a little
careless lady in the story.
