Lesson 18
How Do You Define Worship?
(Purpose 1: Worship)
Lesson Objective
To realize that worship is “more than a song.” In fact, we can worship God in every

Prayer as You Prepare
Lord, help us to understand that we can worship You with our entire lives through
service, surrender, song and even everyday actions. Thank You for being the boss of my life—
may I live a life that is glorifying to Your Name. Bring us back to the true “heart of worship.”
Amen.
During the journey
ACTIVITY PAGE: JOYFUL WORSHIP
On one side of the handout there will be pictures of many things that can bring
worship to God. On the other side of the handout are specific ways that these things can
bring worship to God. Match the picture to the correct way it can bring worship to God. Then
have your students answer the following questions:
• Is worship more than music?
• Besides music, how can I make “joyful worship” to God?
On the back of the handout will be the five “Quiet Time Check-in” review questions
for Mark 5:1–6:56.

Begin the Journey
Before your students ever open their workbook do this activity. Using your phone and
whatever music app of your choice (YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, iTunes), find Matt Redman’s
song, “Heart of Worship,” for your students to listen to. Ask your students to break up the
verses of the song to really get to the heart of the song and to get what the words really
mean.
Now go through the “Begin the Journey” section.
Did You Know?
How can your students use Paul’s suggestions to surrender their lives to God every day?
OBJECT LESSON: PITCHER’S MOUND—WORSHIP
This week we will be familiarizing your students with the “Base System.” As we begin
our study of the “Base System”, we will start by focusing on the central part of the baseball
diamond—the pitcher’s mound. The pitcher’s mound is where the first purpose can be
found—WORSHIP. The pitcher’s mound is a very important position; from this spot, the
pitcher can throw the ball to any of the other bases—it is at the center of the field. Similarly,
the heart of worship must be at the center of our spiritual journey. In everything we do, we
must surrender ourselves, our desires, to God’s Will
Seek the Treasure
“…give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and
holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.”
-Romans 12:1
Uncover the Truth
How awesome that we are not limited to one way of worship! Even when students are
doing their chores, if their minds are focused on God, they are worshipping Him.
• Mark 12:30 gives four ways to focus on or love God when you worship. What are those
four areas?
1. Heart
2. Soul
3. Mind
4. Strength
• Romans 12 gives us instructions on how we can have hearts of worship. Work together
in your group as “one body” to fill in the ten answers below. Discuss what it would look
like to worship following these instructions.
Children’s 101 Lesson 18 LEADER GUIDE
1. Do not conform. Be holy or transformed. (Verse 2)
Make sure your students understand these two big words—conform and
transformed. What are ways this is seen practically in their lives today?
2. Do not think you are better than others. Be humble. (Verse 3)
Again, what would true humility look like in your students’ lives today?
3. Work together as one body. (Verse 4–5)
Use the actual human body to clearly illustrate this concept.
4. Use whatever gifts God has given you. (Verse 6–8)
We are not talking about birthday or Christmas gifts, but what makes up our
S.H.A.P.E.
5. Turn from evil. Do what is good. (Verse 9)
How do we know the difference between good and evil? This is a great
discussion starter to get your students talking.
6. Love others more than you love yourself. (Verse 10)
How do we really do this when we live in a “me-world”?
7. Be filled with spiritual fervor. (Verse 11)
Do your students understand what fervor is? True spiritual passion? Devotion?
8. Serve others. Be joyful. (Verse 12–13)
It goes beyond just serving others; we need to also be joyful in this service to
give God our worship.
9. Live in harmony with one another. (Verse 14–20)
How can your students do this with their siblings, parents, friends or enemies?
10. Do what is right no matter what. (Verse 21)
This is the toughest, final statement. How can we know what is right? Even more
how can we remember to do what is right no matter what?
Find the Purpose
Really move your students past the idea that worship is limited to singing. Worship is a
way of life that we hope and pray your students understand and strive for daily.
• What are ways that you can live a life of worship?
Answers will vary. Hopefully they have lots of ideas based upon your discussion
of Romans 12. If not, you may need to reevaluate the time spent in discussing Romans
12 and even consider revisiting it.
Children’s 101 Lesson 18 LEADER GUIDE
• What do you need to give up in order to live a life of worship?
Answers will vary. Some things to give up may include our selfishness, our pride,
our plans, busyness, social media and time.
Play a worship song for your group as they work on the word search. Even encourage
your students to sing along as they work. Ask: How do they hear the words of the song
differently now that we have discussed worship more in-depth?
Most of the answers are found vertically either to be read downwards or upwards.
There is one horizontal answer— “music.” Also, there is one diagonal answer— “God.”

GAME: HAPPY HANDS, WONDERFUL WORSHIP
Objective: To be challenged to make worship a full body experience.
Materials: Bells (1 per student) and “Happy Hands” handout
Instructions: Give each student a bell and the following instructions:
Worship is more than just singing a song, as we have discussed. It can be
dancing, reading the Bible, praying to God or more. I have six words that describe
worship. Each word is associated with an action. Every time I say a word, you must do
the action that is associated with the word. For example, when I say, “Praise,” you
must clap your hands.
Once your students are ready, read slowly through the list of words and actions.
Speed up over time so your students must think and react quickly. Before you know it, you
will have a room full of praise!
PRAISE: Clap your hands
SURRENDER: Lay Down
LOVE: Shake your bells
SERVE: Stomp your feet
GOD: Say, “WOO HOO”
DANCE: Dance
Note: Remind your students to only use the bells when instructed or else you will have a
room of happy hands and out-of-control worship.
Discussion
1. What did you learn about worship by playing this game?
2. Can worship be more than singing? Why or why not? How?
3. How can you surrender every area of your life to God? Is this an easy thing to do?
Why or why not?
After the journey
Ask your students to find a symbol of surrender—a white bandanna (representing the
white flag), a stone (representing the five stones that David had when He fought Goliath) or
even a cross (representing Jesus’ surrender to God’s will). Maybe there is something special
that reminds you of surrender. Whatever it might be, have your students find something
tangible to remind them to surrender their lives as an act of worship to God. Check-in with
your students to see how they did in surrendering their lives to God this week.
