Case Based Questions (5X3)
24. Astudent is solving aproblem in physics where he needs to derive
the formula for the time period (T) of a simple pendulum. He knows that
the time period depends on the length (L) of the pendulum and the
acceleration due to gravity (e).
Questions
1. Using dimensional analysis, derive the formula for the time period
(T) of the pendulum in termsof (L) and (g) (1)
2. The student incorrectly assumes that the time period also
depends on the mass (m) of the bob. Using dimensional analysis, explain
why this assumption is incorrect.
(1)
3. The length of the pendulum is measured to be 1.00m with an
uncertainty of 0.01m. calculate the maximum possible error in the time
period if the acceleration due to gravity is 9.8m/s?. (1)
4 Explainabout dimensional analysis. (2)
25. Anobject released near the surface of the earth is accelerated
downwards under the influence of the force of gravity. The magnitude of
acceleration due to gravity is represented byg. If air resistance is
neglected, the object is said to be in free fall.
If the height through which the object falls is small compared to the
earth's radius, gcan be taken to be constant, equal to 9.8m/s.
Free fall is thus a case of motion with uniform acceleration. We assume
that the motion is in y- direction, more correctly in y direction because
we choose upwards directions as positive.
Since the acceleration due togravity is always downwards, it is in the
negative direction and we have a =-g=-9.8m/s². The object is released
from rest at y=0. Therefore vo =0 and the equation of motion becomes
V=0-gt= 9.8m/s'm/s
Y=0-1/2gt = -4.9tm
V²=0-2gy =-19.6ym/s?
These equation gives the velocity and the distance travelled as a function
of time and also the variation of velocity with distance.
Questions:
1. Suppose you hold a book in one hand and a flat sheet of paper in
another hand. You drop them both, and they fall to the ground. The falling
book is a good example of free fall but paper is not because:

b) The paper isrelatively more affected by gravity.
c Free fall is the motion of an object when gravity is only
significant force on it. The paper is significantly affected
by the paper but paper is not.
d) None of these.
2. Suppose you throw a ballstraight up into the air. The corret
option is
