Problem Sheet 04
AcademicYear:2023/2024 Date:01st November 2024
01. A general manager at a certain software company claims that the cost for the testing a
software is more than $112 per project. A random sample of 30 software have a mean
testing of $100. Is there sufficient evidence to support the manager’s claim? Suppose that
the previous studies were confirm that the testing cost per a software project following a
normal distribution with standard deviation of $15. (Use α = 0.05)
02. Boys in age 26 years are known to have a mean weight of 85 kg. The management of a
certain a municipal children’s home claims that the average weight of the boys in age 16
years living in their municipal children’s home in the defined average weight or greater.
As one bit of evidence, 25 boys in age 16 years are weighted and found to have a mean
weight of 80.94 kg. It is known that the population standard deviation is 11.6 kg. Based on
the available data, what should be concluded about the complaint? Assume that the weights
of the boys are normally distributed. (Use α = 0.05)
03. Historical data indicate that the average time to complete a special task of a software
program in a certain software development company is 5.2 hours. To check whether there
has been any recent change in this value, the completed time (in hours) of the said special
task by 12 developers over the past week has been measured, with the following results:
6.1, 5.4, 4.8, 5.8, 6.6, 5.3, 6.1, 4.4, 3.9, 6.8, 6.5, 6.3
Are these data strong enough, at the 5 percent level of significance, for us to conclude that
the average time to complete the task has changed from its historical value? (Assume that
time to complete a special task is normally distributed).
04. In a software engineering company, a quality assurance rule is ensuring that any software
developed by their company may have fault measure as 1.5. The company had applied new
quality checking procedure and the managements claims that due to this new procedure an
average fault measure will be less than the 1.5. To test this claim, a sample of 20 of the
firms’ software products was analyzed. If the average fault measure of these 20-software
product were 1.42 and the standard deviation of fault measure was 0.7. What conclusions
could be drawn about the claim of the management of the said company, at the 5 percent
level of significance? Hint: Assume that the fault measure is normally distributed
05. A company sells computers and computer parts as an online business. The company claims
that 90% of all orders were delivered within 72 hours after they were received the order.
The quality control department taken sample of 150 orders, and it showed that 129 of them
were delivered within 72 hours from the ordered time. Do you think the company's claim
is true? Use 0.05 significance level.
06. The completed times of a project for a group of software developers before and after
training interventions are recorded below.
Employee Before After
No. Time Time
1 22 18
2 25 21
3 17 16
4 24 22
5 16 19
6 29 24
7 20 17
8 23 21
9 19 23
10 20 18
Using α = 0.05, should we conclude that the training intervention affects the completed
times of a project for the developers?
07. A method for measuring the pH level of a solution yields a measurement value that is
normally distributed with a mean equal to the actual pH of the solution and with a standard
deviation equal to 0.05. An environmental pollution scientist claims that two different
solutions come from the same source. If this is so, then the pH level of the solutions will
be equal. To test the plausibility of this claim, 10 independent measurements were made of
the pH level for both solutions, with the following data resulting:
Measurement of solution A: 6.24, 6.31, 6.28, 6.30, 6.25, 6.26, 6.24, 6.29, 6.22, 6.28
Measurement of solution B: 6.27, 6.25, 6.33, 6.27, 6.24, 6.31, 6.28, 6.29, 6.34, 6.27.
a) What do you conclude about this environmental pollution scientist’s claim?
b) Find the 95% confidence interval on the difference in mean pH level of two solutions
(𝜇1 − 𝜇2).
