Transitional Words
and PhrasesWhat are they?
Transitional words and phrases keep our thoughts from
sounding choppy or disjointed. They should be used in all
types of writing, both narrative AND
expository.
It’s like dominoes when they are knocked down.
They make the whole story flow together
one after the other from beginning to end.How do they help us as writers?
> Transitional words and phrases help writing flow from
idea to idea, smoothly and naturally. They “glue”
ideas together. Think of them like a “bridge” to close
the gap between ideas in your writing.

To begin with, | have to clean out all of the trash! Just
think about it, | have to touch the rotten, decaying
food while lugging it out to the street. You have to
admit, that’s a pretty nasty job.
Next, | vacuum under every seat and in the
aisles. After that, | clean all of the windows, inside and
out, until they shine. Then, | scrub every inch of the
outside of the van with hot, soapy water. For the final
step, | dry the van with special towels that don’t have
any lint. As you can imagine, I’m always proud of the
