1. Why is it difficult to walk on a smooth plane? This involves the concept of friction. Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact. When you walk, friction between your feet and the ground helps push you forward. If you're walking on a smooth surface, the friction is much lower than on a rough surface, making it harder for your feet to "grip" the ground. As a result, you slip more easily, and it becomes harder to walk. Friction and its types: There are two types of friction that matter here: Static friction: This prevents your feet from slipping when you begin to walk. Kinetic friction: This opposes motion once your feet start moving. On a smooth plane, the static and kinetic friction are both reduced, making it harder to walk without slipping. 2. Why does an electric fan rotate? This involves the principles of electromagnetism. Electric fans contain an electric motor, which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Electric Motor Basics: Inside the fan's motor, there are coils of wire (usually made of copper) and magnets. When electric current passes through the coils, it creates a magnetic field. The interaction between this magnetic field and the permanent magnets in the motor produces a force that causes the motor's rotor to spin. This spinning motion of the rotor is transferred to the fan blades, causing them to rotate. Lorentz Force: The underlying physics here is the Lorentz force, which is the force experienced by charged particles (in this case, electrons in the wires) when they move through a magnetic field. The rotation of the fan continues as long as there is an electric current, converting electrical energy into kinetic energy (the motion of the blades). In summary: Walking on a smooth surface is difficult due to reduced friction. An electric fan rotates because of the electromagnetic forces generated by an electric current in the motor.
