Day 12

Scales:
You’re going to begin today’s lesson by learning the Am Pentatonic scale / C Major Pentatonic scale.
Review the information about the scale pattern notated below and be sure to use the correct fingering.
Identify the C Major root note in the scale, located on the 5th fret of the G string. We'll be learning all
scales in terms of major keys and you will be able to relate those to minor in later sections. (Root Note)

E|-----------------------------------5--8--
B|-----------------------------5--8--------
G|-----------------------(5)-7-------------
D|-----------------5--7--------------------
A|-----------5--7--------------------------
E|-----5--8--------------------------------

Jamming/Improvising:
Make sure you practice playing through the scale several times until you feel somewhat comfortable. Now,
it’s time to be creative and have some fun! You can use any of the notes within the scale and put them into
any combination you want. Come up with your own melodies and riffs and have fun improvising a guitar
solo! The following are a few examples of how to string together riffs using the scale. A great analogy to
remember is that you want to put the notes of your scale together in the same way that you would
put a sentence together when speaking. Combine notes into phrases of 3, 4, or 5 notes and then allow a
little breathing room before starting the next phrase.
