UNDERTALE

Based off the video game by Toby Fox

PROLOGUE: Long ago two races ruled over Earth: Monsters and Humans. Monsters
possessed special gifts, as they had powers, unique to every monster, they had magic. But one
day, war broke out between the two races. Ultimately the humans were victorious. With the help
of mages, the very rare breed of humans that possessed magic, a spell was cast that sealed all of
monsterkind underneath the great MT. Ebott, only the power of seven human souls could break
the spell, as there are seven different traits for each soul, justice, integrity, patience,
determination, bravery, kindness, and perseverance. But after centuries, the monsters and
humans continued to live their lives separately. Now in the year 201X, the tale of war had turned
from stories to legend, and legend to myth. It is said that those who climb the mountain never
return. But that story has already been told countless times, this is the story of a human child who
fell into the underground world and discovered that every myth has a bit of truth behind it. This
is a story about mercy, danger, and most importantly, this is a story that is filled with…
Determination.

CHAPTER 1: FALLEN DOWN

Frisk awoke in a small patch of yellow flowers, unknowingly how long they've blacked out for.
They stood up, legs wobbling and their body still sore from the fall. Frisk looked up to see
sunlight coming from the hole above. There was no way to get back up, but there seemed to be a
natural path towards the ruins of an ancient city. The ruins were vast, there was only silence.
Frisk rested on a giant stone brick, it was dusty and rough. It was freezing, as there was no
natural sunlight, only that from geodes in the walls of the collapsed buildings. The architecture
was extremely dated, it had to be a century old at least, but how did a civilization thrive down
here, and who lived in it? Suddenly a faint sweet smell wafted through the air, Frisk followed the
scent, to a small patch of grass, with a single yellow flower directly in the middle.
“Howdy!” a disembodied voice kindly greeted in a high pitched voice with a faint
southern accent. Frisk frantically looked around, but there was nobody there.
“Down here” the voice spoke once again. Frisk listened closely this time, the voice seemed to be
coming from the flower, but that couldn’t be, unless Frisk hit their head hard. Suddenly two big
black beady eyes appeared in the flower, as well as a smile. Frisk stumbled back out of fear.
“Don’t be scared, I’m Flowey, Flowey the flower” Flowey introduced himself. “I can
see that you’re new here to the underground, but never fear, I’ll teach you how things work down
here” just as he finished speaking, 5 white ovals floated above Flowey. “These are
friendliness pellets, down here we share these with people that we consider close friends, go
ahead, try to catch as many as you can.” The pellets slowly floated towards Frisk, but they were
too busy wondering if this was real or if it was a hallucination. BAM! One of the pellets hit Frisk,
knocking them to the ground, causing immense pain, Frisk clenched their stomach, struggling to
stand. “You idiot!” Flowey spoke in a more sinister tone, “In this world it’s kill or be killed,”
Flowey cackled maniacally, as countless pellets materialized all around slowly closing in. Was
this the end? Floosh! A small fireball hit Flowey, knocking him out of the ground and into the
shadows, the pellets faded.
“What a terrible creature, torturing a poor innocent youth.” a woman’s voice said from
the darkness. Footsteps grew louder and a figure emerged from the shadows. She wore a purple
dress with a white emblem on it, her feet were… furry? Frisk slowly looked up to see a female
goat-like monster standing there before them, it became evidently clear that this wasn’t a dream.
they blacked out once again.

CHAPTER 2: THE CARETAKER AND THE

JOKESTER
Frisk was shrouded in darkness, it took a few minutes for their eyes to adjust, they looked around
the room, it was a child’s bedroom, Frisk looked for a light switch. With the lights on, Frisk
could see. The room had a dresser, a small desk with art supplies, a bookshelf , and a bin full of
toys. Frisk exited the room and stepped into a hallway, Frisk tiptoed down the hall, past a
staircase, arriving at a living room. The room was a decent size, two arm chairs faced each other,
a fireplace between them. The warmth of the flames filled the room. Frisk could hear a woman
humming from another room, the humming grew louder, as footsteps approached, the smell grew
as well. Frisk thought about heading towards it, but then they remembered what they saw, and
tried to think if it was real. They didn’t have to think for long as the monster came fourth holding
an enormous pie, she placed the pie down on a table.
“Hello there little one, do not be frightened, I am Toriel, the caretaker of these ruins”
Frisk was less fearful as she got on one knee and talked in a calming voice. “I was not expecting
you to be awake yet, I have just finished baking a treat for you, a butterscotch and cinnamon
pie.” Frisk’s stomach growled.
Frisk asked Toriel when they could go home, Toriel began to sweat, “ What do you mean? This
is your home.” Frisk asked politely how to exit the ruins. “Stay here, I’ll be right back” Toriel
spoke in a stern tone, walking down the staircase, Frisk followed closely behind. At the bottom
of the stairs, the interior changed to match that of the ruins, “Down here is a one-way exit to the
rest of the underground, I’m going to destroy it” Toriel continued down the hall, Frisk still kept
up though. “Every human that falls down here meets the same fate, they come, they leave, they
die.” Toriel stated, in both a serious and shaking voice, “The… will kill you” Toriel blocks the
way. Frisk desperately wants to leave but they don’t want to fight Toriel. Flames began to emit
from her hands, blowing towards Frisk. Dodging and weaving to avoid getting burnt, coming
uncomfortably close to the flames, Frisk tried to reason with Toriel, but there was no avail, but
Frisk noticed something interesting, she seemed to be controlling the fire to go around them, She
didn’t want to harm Frisk, she was fighting back tears, Frisk darted towards her, taking Toriel by
surprise and gave her a hug. The fire extinguished instantly, she smiled and returned the
embrace, she was hurt by something that had happened long ago. Toriel bid farewell but not
before giving Frisk an old, outdated flip phone with one number in the contacts, “If you ever
need advice or somebody to talk to, you can always call me, and one last thing…” Toriel handed
Frisk a backpack with a container of a slice of pie and twenty gold coins. After Toriel left, Frisk
came across a small grass patch, Flowey sprouted out of the ground.
“Clever, you think you’re sooo smart huh?” Flowey exclaimed sarcastically “but what
will you do if you meet a relentless killer? Will you tire and then kill out of spite? I hope so.”
Flowey laughed maniacally once again, before burrowing back into the ground. Frisk was
concerned that they’ll bump into Flowey again, hopefully not, so they continued towards the exit
to the ruins. Outside was a snow filled forest, the trees packed tightly together and towered high
above, a single path led the way forwards. Frisk made their way down the narrow path, not being
able to help the feeling that they were being followed, coming across a small wooden bridge. The
bridge crossed over a bottomless chasm, around the bridge were big wooden beams, like a cage,
only the beams were spaced too far apart to actually stop someone from crossing.
“Human…” a voice from behind greeted, “Don’t you know how to greet a new pal? Turn
around and shake my hand.” Frisk slowly turned, just as the voice requested, they extended their
hand and…PFFFFT! The voice’s owner laughed hysterically “ heh, the old whoopie cushion in
the hand trick, classic” the creature was a skeleton, he wore a light gray t-shirt with an unzipped
dark blue hoodie on top, he also wore black shorts and…fuzzy pink slippers. “I’m Sans, Sans the
skeleton” Sans introduced himself “ I’m supposed to be on the lookout for any humans, but… I
don’t really care, however my brother Papyrus is a human-hunting fanatic, actually, he’s been
down in the dumps lately, if you were to surprise him, that would make his day.” Sans
exclaimed. “Pass through these bars, my bro made them too wide apart to stop anyone.” Frisk
walked between the bars with ease and crossed the bridge, Sans followed closely behind.

CHAPTER 3: ENTER THE GREAT PAPYRUS

On the other side of the bridge, was a big open area before retreating back into another narrow
path. The opening had a small lemonade stand-looking structure and a giant lamp sitting in the
snow; it was slightly taller and wider than Frisk.
“I think that’s him right now, quick, behind this conveniently shaped lamp” Sans gestured, Frisk
saw a tall, slender figure approaching, they followed Sans’ directions and hid behind the lamp.
The sound of crunching snow grew louder and more rapid, until there was a short silence. “Sup
bro?”
“You know what's up brother” an irritated voice rang out. Frisk carefully peeked from
behind the lamp to see another skeleton, only this one was double the height of Sans and wore a
white chestplate with gold cufflinks and a red scarf with matching boots. “It’s been eight days
and you have still not recalibrated your puzzles!” Papyrus growled at his brother “what are you
even doing?”
“Staring at this lamp, it’s very cool, wanna look?” Sans jokingly replied. This seemed to
be the last straw for Papyrus as he started to stomp his foot and scream
“No! I don’t have time for that! What if a human comes through here!?! I will be the one,
I must be the one to capture them” Papyrus paused to catch his breath, which didn’t make sense
considering he had no lungs. “ Then I, The Great Papyrus, will finally be able to join the royal
guard” talking highly of himself and in the third person seemed to calm him down, but that
didn’t last long as Sans had something to say,
“Hmmm… Maybe this lamp can help you”
“Sans! You’re not helping! You get lazier every day!”
“Hey take it easy, I got a ton of work done today” Sans paused “ a skele-ton”
“Sans!” Papyrus was annoyed with his brother, he sighed, “ I will attend to my puzzles,
as for your work, put a little more… Backbone into it” Papyrus laughed at his own joke, while
Sans was just standing there silently, Papyrus soon left.
“Alright, you can come out now, just follow the trail and we’ll see ya in a little bit” Sans
said, before disappearing into the trees. Frisk came out from their hiding place, it took almost ten
minutes of walking before the trail slowly widened. Most of the walk they stared at the ground,
but looked up as soon as they heard Sans and Papyrus’ voices once again.
Papyrus was about to start a conversation with his brother when he looked towards Frisk and
instantly went quiet, he looked back at Sans then to Frisk, then back to Sans again, this went on
for a bit, with Sans pretending to be just as surprised as Papyrus. “Sans, oh my god! Is that…
a human?!”
“Actually I think that’s a rock” Frisk looked at Papyrus more closely and saw that he was
looking past them and at a big rock in the middle of the path.
“Oh”
“Hey, what’s that in front of the rock?” Sans played along
“Oh my god! Is that a human?!”
“Yes”
“Oh my god!..Ahem” Papyrus cleared his throat before addressing Frisk, “Human! You
shall not pass this area, I, The Great Papyrus will capture you, you will then be delivered to the
capital, then… I’m not sure what happens after, but anyway, continue if you dare!” Papyrus ran
away laughing.
“Don’t sweat it kid, he’s completely harmless” Sans reassured. Frisk followed Sans to
another open area, a majority of the ground was covered with ice. “Oh, hey kid, my brother has a
special attack, a blue attack, if you don’t move it can’t hurt you, just keep that in mind” Frisk
thanked Sans for the word of advice. Frisk continued down the path into another area, only this
one was wide and empty, Frisk was caught off guard when they saw Sans talking to Papyrus only
ten feet away, that couldn’t be possible, as Sans was just in the last area, and he didn’t walk past
them, before they could try to wrap their head around what happened, Papyrus greeted them
from afar
“Human, welcome to your first puzzle, which will also be your last, as you will never get past
it.”

CHAPTER 4: PUZZLES AND TRIALS

“You will find this puzzle quite…shocking” Papyrus started to explain the puzzle,
“ this is the invisible electricity maze, whenever you touch the walls, this orb will transfer
an electric shock” Papyrus pulled out a small silver ball from his pocket, it was no bigger
than an orange. “Go ahead and try it.” Frisk put up their arms in front of them so that they
don’t run into a wall just in case there actually is an invisible maze. Frisk’s hands made
contact with something with a concrete texture, as soon as they touched it, a loud
sparking sound emitted from the orb in Papyrus’ hand, he shook rapidly, Frisk
immediately took their hands off the wall.
“Call it a hunch, but I think the human has to hold the orb.” Sans advised his brother
“Oh, okay” Papyrus happily replied as he walked through the maze, taking multiple turns
before dropping the orb into Frisk’s hands then he retreated back though the maze. Papyrus left
deep footprints behind, Frisk followed them very closely, making their way through the maze,
standing before the two brothers.“Amazing! You managed to get past this puzzle so easily!”
perhaps this is where Frisk Truly belonged, as for the first time in a long time they were happy.
