CHAPTER 4 SET 1

II Question 19

The Lamborghini Huracán has an initial acceleration of 0.75g. Its mass, with driver, is m kg. If a
passenger with mass mp rode along, what would the car’s acceleration be?

II Question 23

Two children fight over a stuffed bear with mass m. The boy with mass mr pulls to the right with a
force of Fr and the girl mL pulls to the left with a FL force. Ignore all other forces on the bear (such as
its weight). (Fr < FL) and (mr > mL)

1. At this instant, can you say what the velocity of the bear is? If so, what are the magnitude
and direction of the velocity?
2. At this instant, can you say what the acceleration of the bear is? If so, what are the
magnitude and direction of the acceleration?

II Question 25

An ice skater with mass m is gliding along at speed vi. A time t seconds later her speed has dropped
to vf. What is the magnitude of the kinetic friction acting on her skates?

CHAPTER 4 SET 2

II Question 43

Three ice skaters, numbered 1, 2, and 3, stand in a line, each with her hands on the shoulders of the
skater in front. Skater 3, at the rear, pushes on skater 2. Identify all the action/reaction pairs of forces
between the three skaters. Draw a free-body diagram for skater 2, in the middle. Assume the ice is
frictionless.

II Question 45

A car is skidding to a stop on a level stretch of road. Identify all the action/reaction pairs of forces
between the car and the road surface. Then draw a free-body diagram for the car.
III Question 46

Squid use jet propulsion for rapid escapes. A squid pulls water into its body and then rapidly ejects
the water backward to propel itself forward. A 1.5 kg squid (not including water mass) can accelerate
at 20m/s220 m/s2 by ejecting 0.15 kg of water.

1. What is the magnitude of the thrust force on the squid?

2. What is the magnitude of the force on the water being ejected?
3. What acceleration is experienced by the water?

IV Question 51

A student draws the flawed free-body diagram shown in the figure below to represent the forces
acting on a car traveling at constant speed on a level road. Identify the errors in the diagram, then
draw a correct free-body diagram for this situation.

III Question 67

There is excellent data on the remarkable acceleration that greyhound dogs can achieve. A
smoothed version of such data is shown in the figure below. The acceleration at low speeds is
constant and is limited by the fact that any greater acceleration would result in the dog pitching
forward because of the force acting on its hind legs during its power stroke. At higher speeds, the
dog’s acceleration is limited by the maximum power its muscles can provide.

1. What is the agent of the force that causes the dog to accelerate?
2. If the dog’s mass is 32 kg, what is the average force acting on it during its initial acceleration
phase?
3. How far does the dog run in the first 4.0 s?

IV Question 69

The fastest pitched baseball was clocked at speed v. If the pitcher exerted his force (assumed to be
horizontal and constant) over a distance of x, and a baseball has a mass of m,

1. Draw a free-body diagram of the ball during the pitch.

2. What force did the pitcher exert on the ball during this record-setting pitch?
3. Estimate the force in part b as a fraction of the pitcher’s weight.

Question 26 Friction

A crate pushed along the floor with velocity vi slides a distance d after the pushing force is removed.

1. If the mass of the crate is doubled but the initial velocity is not changed, what distance does
the crate slide before stopping? Explain.
2. If the initial velocity of the crate is doubled to 2vi but the mass is not changed, what distance
does the crate slide before stopping? Explain.

Question 27 Friction

Two workers are sliding a crate of mass m kilograms across the floor. One worker pushes forward on
the crate with a force of F1 newtons while the other pulls in the same direction with a force of F2
newtons using a rope connected to the crate. Both forces are horizontal, and the crate slides with a
constant speed. What is the crate’s coefficient of kinetic friction on the floor?

Question 28 Friction

A truck with mass m kg is parked on a slope with an angle

θ
from the horizontal. How big is the friction force on the truck? (Numerical Answer From Textbook:
4800N)

Question 29 Friction

A car of mass m kilogram is traveling at a speed v skids to a halt on wet concrete where the
coefficient of kinetic friction is μk. How long are the skid marks?

Question 30 Friction
A dump truck, whose bed is made of steel, holds an old steel watering trough where the coefficient
of friction between the two surfaces is μ
. The bed of the truck is slowly raised until the trough begins to slide. What is the acceleration of the
trough as it slides down the truck bed? (Numerical Answer From Textbook: 1.5 m/s2)

Question 31 Friction

A crate of mass m kilograms is placed on a horizontal conveyor belt. The materials are such that the
coefficient of static friction is μs and the coefficient of kinetic friction is μk.

1. Draw a free-body diagram showing all the forces on the crate if the conveyer belt runs at
constant speed.
2. Draw a free-body diagram showing all the forces on the crate if the conveyer belt is speeding
up.
3. What is the maximum acceleration the belt can have without the crate slipping?
4. If the acceleration of the belt exceeds the value determined in part c, what is the acceleration
of the crate?

Question 33 Friction

The rolling resistance for steel on steel is quite low; the coefficient of rolling friction is μr. Suppose a
locomotive of mass m kilograms is rolling at speed v on level rails. If the engineer disengages the
engine, how much time will it take the locomotive to coast to a stop? How far will the locomotive
move during this time?

CHAPTER 5 SET 3
Question 20 Apparent Weight

● Riders on the Power Tower are launched skyward with an acceleration of 4g, after which
they experience a period of free fall. What is a rider’s (with mass m kilograms) apparent
weight
1. During the launch?
2. During the period of free fall?
Question 22 Mass and Apparent Weight

An astronaut lifts off in a rocket from the surface of the moon, where the acceleration due to gravity
is gmoon which is 1/6 of earth's acceleration due to gravity. What vertical acceleration should his
rocket have so that his apparent weight is equal to his true weight on earth?

Question 43 Interacting Objects

Blocks with masses of m1, m2 and m3 are lined up in a row on a frictionless table. All three are
pushed forward by a force F applied to the m1 block. How much force does the m2 block exert on (a)
the m3 block and (b) the m1 block?

Question 46 Ropes and Pulleys

The figure below shows two blocks of mass m connected by a rope. A second rope hangs beneath
the lower block. Both ropes have a mass of mrope. The entire assembly is accelerated upward with
magnitude a exerted by a force F.

1. What is F?
2. What is the tension at the top end of rope 1?
3. What is the tension at the bottom end of rope 1?
4. What is the tension at the top end of rope 2?
