Nutrition in Plants

Nutrition:- Nutrition is the process by which organisms obtain and use food for growth, repair,
and maintaining life processes.

1.Autotrophic Nutrition:- Plants make their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon
dioxide through the process of photosynthesis.

Examples: Green plants, algae.

Photosynthesis – The process by which green plants prepare their food using sunlight, carbon
dioxide, water, and chlorophyll.

Carbon Dioxide: Absorbed from air through stomata.

Water: Absorbed from soil by roots.

Sunlight: Provides energy for the process.

Chlorophyll: Traps sunlight.

MCQs

1. Which of the following is an autotrophic plant?

a) Cuscuta

b) Mushroom

c) Neem tree

d) Venus flytrap

2. The process by which green plants make their own food is called:

a) Respiration

b) Photosynthesis

c) Digestion

d) Fermentation
3. Which pigment is responsible for photosynthesis in plants?

a) Hemoglobin

b) Chlorophyll

c) Keratin

d) Melanin

4. During photosynthesis, plants take in:

a) Oxygen

b) Carbon dioxide

c) Nitrogen

d) Methane

5. The energy required for photosynthesis comes from:

a) Soil nutrients

b) Sunlight

c) Water

d) Air

ii. One word type questions

1. What is the pigment responsible for photosynthesis?

2. Which gas is absorbed by autotrophs during photosynthesis?

2.Heterotrophic Nutrition:- Plants depend on other organisms for food.

Examples: Fungi, non-green plants like cuscuta.

a.Parasitic Plants:- Obtain food from other living organisms (hosts).

Example: Cuscuta (Amarbel)

b. Saprophytic Plants: Obtain nutrients from dead and decaying matter.

Example: Fungi (mushrooms, molds).

c. Insectivorous Plants:- Trap and digest insects to fulfill their nutrient needs.

Example: Pitcher Plant, Venus Flytrap.

d. Symbiotic Plants:- Two organisms live together and benefit each other.

Example: Lichens (association of algae and fungi).
