Net Ionic Equation Example

December 15, 2024, Engin Yapici

Question: Write the net ionic equation for the reaction between aqueous sodium chloride (NaCl)
and aqueous silver nitrate (AgNO₃) to form silver chloride solid precipitate.

Solution:
1. Split the molecules into Ions (Complete Ionic Equation):

NaCl(aq) => Na+ + Cl-

AgNO3(aq) => Ag+ + NO3-

Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + Ag+(aq) + NO3-(aq) -> Na+(aq) + NO3-(aq) + AgCl(s)

2. Identify the spectator ions:

Spectator ions do not participate in the reaction. Sodium ion (Na+) and nitrate ion (NO3−)
appear unchanged on both sides of the equation.

3. Write down the net ionic equation by omitting the spectator ions:

Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq) -> AgCl(s)
