Secondary Memory Overview

Secondary memory is a type of non-volatile storage used to retain data and programs even when the computer is powered off, with larger capacities and lower costs compared to primary memory. It includes various types such as magnetic storage (HDDs), optical storage (CDs, DVDs), and solid-state storage (USB drives). While it offers long-term data retention, secondary memory is slower and can be prone to physical damage.

MEMORY
INTRODUCTION
• In a computer, memory refers to the physical devices that are used
to store programs or data on a temporary or permanent basis. It is a
group of registers.
• Memory are of two types:
(i) primary memory
(ii) secondary memory.

what is • Secondary memory is a type of computer memory
that is used to store data and programs that can be

accessed or retrieved even after the computer is
turned off

memory ?
• It is a Permanent storage for data and programs.
• It is also called auxiliary memory or external memory
It is non-volatile, i.e. it retains
data when power is switched

SECONDARY MEMORY It is large capacities to the tune of

Slower access compared

to primary memory.

It is cheaper as compared to primary memory

There are three main types of secondary
memory:

TYPES OF • Magnetic storage: Uses a magnetized medium to store data.

SECONDARY
Examples include hard disk drives (HDDs) and magnetic tape.
• Optical storage: Uses light to store data. Examples include

CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.
• Solid state storage: Uses electronics to store data. Examples
include solid state drives (SSDs) and USB memory sticks.
CD Drive

• CD stands for Compact Disk.

• CDs are circular disks that use optical rays, usually lasers, to read and write
data.
• They are very cheap as you can get 700 MB of storage space for less than a
dollar.
• CDs are inserted in CD drives built into CPU cabinet.
• They are portable as you can eject the drive, remove the CD and carry it with
you.
• There are three types of CDs −

1.CD-ROM (Compact Disk – Read Only Memory) − The data on these CDs are
recorded by the manufacturer. Proprietary Software, audio or video are released
on CD-ROMs.
2.CD-R (Compact Disk – Recordable) − Data can be written by the user once on the
CD-R. It cannot be deleted or modified later.
3.CD-RW (Compact Disk – Rewritable) − Data can be written and deleted on these
optical disks again and again.
DVD Drive

• DVD stands for Digital Video Display.

• DVD are optical devices that can store 15 times
the data held by CDs.
• They are usually used to store rich multimedia
files that need high storage capacity.
• DVDs also come in three varieties – read only,
recordable and rewritable.
PEN Drive

• Pen drive is a portable memory device that uses

solid state memory rather than magnetic fields or
lasers to record data.
• It uses a technology similar to RAM,
• it is nonvolatile.
• It is also called USB drive, key drive or flash
memory.
BLU RAY
DISK

• Blu Ray Disk (BD) is an optical storage media used to store

high definition (HD) video and other multimedia filed.
• BD uses shorter wavelength laser as compared to
CD/DVD.
• This enables writing arm to focus more tightly on the disk
and hence pack in more data.
• BDs can store up to 128 GB data.
HARD DISK

• A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is a non-volatile storage device used to

store data permanently.
• Consists of rotating platters coated with a magnetic material
and a read/write head.
• Offers large storage capacities, ranging from GBs to several TBs.
• Used for storing operating systems, software, documents, and
media files.
• It is cost-effective
• It has large capacity
• It is also reliable for backups.
WORKING OF • Data stored in binary form.

SECONDARY • Read/Write operations performed

via dedicated controllers.

MEMORY
Advantages:
:

• Cost-effective for large

storage.
• Long-term data retention.

Limitations:

• Slower than RAM.

• Prone to physical damage
(HDDs).
