1.Hydrosphere-
Ans. The area comprising of the water on the surface of the Earth is the
hydrosphere. This includes all the rivers, lakes, streams, oceans etc.
2.Biosphere-
Ans. The biosphere is the layer of the planet Earth where life exists. This
includes all the plants and animals.
3. Lithosphere-
Ans. The solid portion on which we live is the lithosphere. All the rocks,
soil and minerals found in the Earth’s crust form the Lithosphere.
4.Atmosphere-
Ans. The layer of air that surrounds the Earth and enables us to breathe
is called atmosphere.

a) How did “The Northern Plains of India” form?
Ans. The Northern Plains of India have been formed by the alluvium
deposited by river Ganga and its tributaries.
b) What is a Map?
Ans. A map is a two-dimensional representation, usually on a flat surface, of
an entire area or a part of an area on the Earth. In simple terms, maps are

pictures of the Earth's surface. They show landforms, political boundaries,
water bodies, the locations of cities and countries etc.
c) What is a river? Name the two types of rivers.
Ans. A river is a large, flowing body of water that usually empties into a sea or
an ocean. The place of origin of a river is called its source and where a river
enters the sea is called its mouth. The two types of rivers are perennial river
and non-perennial river(seasonal).
d) Identify the symbols and write the signs:-
